Netflix Will Lose Dozens of Movies at The End of The Year

Having trouble clearing out your Netflix queue? You're about to get some help.

Movies and shows come and go on Netflix. Due to timed licensing agreements, you never know if that movie you've been dying to see, but never had the time to watch will disappear on you. Its not particularly noticeable most of the time: One day you'll sit down to watch something you could've sworn was available before, but is no longer in the library. January 1st, 2014 is not going to be one of those times: With almost 100 movies and TV shows being removed when the ball drops, there's a pretty good chance you'll be able to tell something is off.

Based on the sheer number of programs, 84 movies and five TV shows, it isn't a big loss for a service that has tens of thousands of movies. In fact, It's a drop in the bucket compared to when they dropped 1,800 shows and movies in May [http://www.theverge.com/2013/4/30/4287902/netflix-losing-almost-1800-titles-from-its-streaming-library-starting-tomorrow]. Like any good (or bad) list, the turnover is noticeable because of its quality, not its quantity. The parting films includes re-watchable action flicks like Braveheart and Top Gun, goofy comedies Half-Baked and Scary Movie, and one of my personal favorites, Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing. Also, Street Fighter's on the list.

Here's the full list of movies getting pulled from Netflix at the end of the year:

The Rundown

Species

As of this posting you have just over 36 hours to watch these movies. At approximately two hours per film, you could get through 18 of them if you start now. If I could, here's what I'd watch:

Do The Right Thing
Capote
Platoon
Serpico
Half Baked
Top Gun
Ronin
The Great Train Robbery
In The Name Of The Father
Born On the Fourth Of July
True Grit (1969)
Braveheart
Desperado
The Faculty
October Sky
The Bad News Bears
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
and, of course, Street Fighter

As as UK Netflix user, I think the only one of those that I even have to begin with (that I've ever cared enough about watching to notice) is Eternal Sunshine. Now, not that I want to derail this news thread with a tirade about how Netflix should stop fucking over non-US users for no reason... but yeah, STOP FUCKING ME OVER FOR NO REASON NETFLIX!

(Also, Seed of Chucky is on that list twice.)

Noooo not Breakin 2: Electric Boogaloo!

Actually, never mind, the Canadian Netflix never even had any of these titles to begin with. And the American version of Netflix will still have like ten times the Canadian selection after this purge so you Americans quit your complaining and enjoy not having the majority of free video content being region-blocked.

On a related note, did you see that video of Jean Claude Van Damme and Arnold Schwarzenegger singing a Whole New World as a duet while drunk in a Karaoke bar? (click the spoiler)
We're sorry, but this video has not been made available in your country.

...see? That's how it feels to be Canadian on the internet

Looks like I'll be watching Killer Klowns from Outer Space tonight. I'd heard about this but hadn't found a list this comprehensive as of yet, so thanks for that.

The Secret of Nimh is the only big loss for me on that list. it never airs on TV and it's impossible to find on DVD in stores.

I think the only thing that will be removed from my Queue is Kids in the Hall. And then, I don't really care because I own it on DVD.

Still, some of those movies are fun. It's a shame they do this every few months.

Captcha: Do you intend to shop online during the holidays?

...Errr...Which holidays?

Eh, I can't even use Netflix since I don't have a credit card.

Now I'm kinda interested though in watching I'm Gonna Get You Sucka.

Oh well, thank God for my big ass dvd/blu-ray collection.

UK netflix is a waste of valuable bandwidth. I suppose if you really want to watch series's it has some things but in terms of movies, or bigger budget stuff it's got shit all.

And utter SHIT in terms of animated stuff my god. I mean I know these kind of companies don't care what kids (lalalal all animated stuff is for kids) but at least put something there. As it is it's all these lame for braindead kids only shows. Miles of spongebob and a few teletubbies re-runs.

Most of the stuff that is by and large quite frequently re-run on UK television. Free View television.

Consider this a letter to the movie industry.

I'm going to give you the rundown here - You need to really learn to do the right thing if you don't want to go up in smoke. It's this body of evidence that make you a hard target for pirates. These aren't some desperado mystery men or some kids in the hall coming out of the Russia house that you can throw cuffs on and put away to solve the problem. These people are different kind of species. In fact, they can't hardly wait when they gonna get you sucka, when they finally form the dream team that's capable of making you running scared. Then you'll have to pick up the remains and go back to school to learn how you transformed your own industry into the Titanic. Unless things change, this is as good as it gets, and the best of times have past; no requiem for a dream that will make them disappear, no eternal sunshine for the spotless mind, but instead what dreams may come are dark shadows that will overcome you. It's time to form a platoon (despite the odd couple you are), fight back, show your true grit, and win these war games using unconventional tactics. As for advice, I can tell you that throwing a brick at them does nothing either. And when you win, you can go back to being the faculty, instead of soldiers, jarheads, windtalkers and top gun pilots you were in this war. But remember what you have learned, for there will always be times of war and peace.

So, in the end, if you want the industry to see another October sky, it's time to change. No shorcuts. Do this in the name of the father, the producer of The Great Train Robbery. Are you getting this all through the skulls of your pumpkinheads? Because if you don't, you'll find yourself half baked and flashdancing in Flint under the name "Foxy Brown" aka "The Woman in Red", getting your electric boogaloo on like it's a Roman holiday in front of Mr. Bean and Rob Roy, your most frequent customers. Meanwhile, you're hoping to move up to the best little whorehouse in Texas. Is that the kind of direction you want to go?

What really frustrates me about netflix is that they won't let you browse their catalog to see if they have some specific title if you aren't a member. Years ago I used to be, but I dropped it because there was never anything I wanted to stream. I'm hardly going to rejoin now when there are countless stories about them losing more and more content.

Now that all the movie rental stores are out of business, and apparently tons of stuff isn't on netflix I think they are going to find even tons of normally paying customers start to torrent or stream pirated copies. God knows there are like 5 movies a year I'd pay even ticket price to see. I'm certainly not going to buy all the movies I'm kinda interested in. No worries though hollywood I won't be even watching streaming copies, I just won't watch them period. That'll protect your bottom line right?

Seriously considering dropping this service. It has about 3 things I want to watch each month and that's costing me 8$. I'd rather not watch those 3 things than continue paying 8$ a month.

It's a bit ironic because more people using Netflix should result in more movies becoming available. Rather than a standard licensing deal I think Netflix should work out some kind of monthly view statistic based payment. During the month the amount of unique users that viewed that movie will result in X amount of money going to the movie owners. Now this is a very complicated way of doing things but I think this would entice people to putting their stuff on Netflix. If someone watches the movie there that means more money coming in.

Right now nobody is buying DVD's any more because why should you because it's all illegally available online? Streaming could really take of as THE way to view a movie if the supply would stand up to the demand. Cinema's will slowly die out, DVD's will go the way of the dodo and then we are left with streaming services... all of them competing with exclusivity bullshit.

The shared profit of a centralized website where you can go and watch how much you want for a monthly subscription fee or maybe youtube style but with more commercials could see profits and number of viewers skyrocketing. Cutting up content in 5 separate suppliers is only going to harm you in the end. There is a reason why users are not tied exclusively to youtube or blip. It's because that would split the user base for no reason. Can you imagine how it would be if these services demanded subscription fees? We'd have sites pirating youtube and blip content.

There is a reason why Game of Thrones is not as successful (not saying that it is doing badly) as it could be. That is because it's not readily available at a price people would be willing to pay. So you can choose. Ignore several million potential viewers or figure out a way to monetize those viewers. The choice is yours and the sword over your head is ever closer to falling.

Ehh they clear out movies and tv shows all the time. Half the anime I've had queued up over the years has gone before I got to it. Still I see one issue with the list of gone with 2013...

Why all the hate for Jean Claude Van Damme Netflix. Street Fighter, Hard Target, Lionheart... I'd hate to be The Quest right now, I think it's all that's left.

As a Swedish Netflix user I think I got like three of the movies in that list, so whatevs. They dropped a shitload of movies/shows just two and a half months ago though.
