Fresh Prince's James "Uncle Phil" Avery Passes Away

James Avery, the actor behind Uncle Phil and the Shredder from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, has died at age 65.

One of the hallmarks of someone who grew up in the early to mid-90s is that they can mostly likely remember the theme to <a href=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBe0VCso0qs>Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Just try it 90s children. If you're anything like me, it will probably take you all of one line of the song ("In west Philadelphia born and raised") to have you reciting the entire thing from eerily accurate memory. It, like the <a href=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woJrjb91pW4>Ducktales theme, is just one of those TV songs that etches itself forever on the fabric of your mind.

The reason it had the opportunity to do this, however, was the fact that Fresh Prince was a pretty danged funny show that. A lot of this owed to the performance of one young Will Smith, but when you get to it, a star is only as good his foil, and Mr. Smith had one of the greatest in James Avery's Uncle Phil. Equal parts funny, dignified, lovable and threatening (the man was the voice of the Shredder for Cthulu's sake), without him Fresh Prince would have been a mere husk of the great series that won over so many long-lived fans.

Sadly, Avery, whose long career includes roles in countless TV shows and movies, in addition to voice work, passed away Tuesday from complications during open-heart surgery. His death has reaped a not unexpected outcry of sadness from his former co-stars. Joseph Marcell, who played the butler Geoffrey, described Avery as "a marvelous man and truly wonderful actor", while Alfonso Ribeiro, who played Carlton, Tweeted that he is"deeply saddened" by his death. Ribeiro would go on to say that "he was a second father to me" and that he "will miss him greatly." Jada Pinkett Smith has also posted her and Will Smith's condolences on <a href=https://www.facebook.com/jada>her Facebook page. Avery was 65 years old.

It always cracked me up when he threw Jazz out of the house, even though you fully well knew it was coming, it was funny every time.

RIP big guy.

As if I really needed a reminder that I was getting old. I loved Fresh Prince, me and everyone else in the Western world. It's difficult not to, since the show is easily one of the most iconic of its decade for many reasons, not just because it was funny. It was also deep, touching, genuine, and one of the first successful TV shows with a majority black cast.

RIP James. You were an icon.

Shame. As many others I really liked Fresh Prince (even though I did have a problem with them always shoe-horning a moral lesson into every episode) and Uncle Phil certainly was a funny character, especially when paired off with Geoffrey (who, along with Carlton, probably were THE funniest characters on the show).

RIP James. Thanks for the laughs.

Farewell good sir. You did a service to TV comedy and animation, and the generation that grew up with you will carry your memory. Now...

It does me good as a fan of TMNT that he could sit and talk about such a ridiculous role with dignity and respect (even if he does use the non-existent word "irregardless").

I never watched FP but I remember catching part of an episode years later where Uncle Phil was pissed off at a guy and he said something like "I'm going to sue you so hard your GRANDKIDS will feel it!" In that last part, I absolutely heard Shredder and I got all kinds of giddy.

He was a big part of my childhood and I wish I could've met him just to say what he meant to me.

Tonight, I will dine on turtle soup in his honor.

Also, this scene gets me every time, even years later:

It wasn't until years later that I learned James Avery was the voice of the Shredder. That was mind-blowing, even more mind-blowing is when the actor mentioned that he played the villain, when paired with Krang, as one half of a bickering couple.

Rest in peace, James. We will miss you deeply.
