DayZ Sells 800,000 in First Month

DayZ creator Dean Hall says that game's fast success is "crazy" and has vastly exceeded all projections.

Last month DayZ joined Steam Early Access and found itself immediately mobbed by eager fans looking to take a zombie-sized bite out of the game's much anticipated stand alone version. More than <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/130626-DayZ-Rushed-By-New-Players-After-Early-Access-Launch>88,000 players bought their way into the alpha version in its first 12 hours of release, something that shocked its creator, Dean Hall.

That being the case, it would seem that the sales wonders didn't stop there. In a recent Reddit thread, Hall revealed that the early access edition has already sold nearly 800,000 copies in less than a month. To suggest that this was unexpected would be putting it lightly. "250k within a quarter was what I would have considered a success," said Hall. "So to move nearly 800,000 in under a month is crazy." The insanity of it all aside, these impressive sales will apparently help further the game's development. "We'll be finalizing our roadmap in mid January, but it is safe to say that this kind of result will be having a very positive effect on that roadmap."

That will likely be welcome news to DayZ fans who, prior to the early access version, went through several <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/129518-DayZ-Standalone-Still-Delayed-Due-to-Bugs-and-Optimization>disappointing delays that held the game back from release. Here's hoping that its success and the "ambitious plans" that Hall and Bohemia have for it going into 2014 will mean a more stable and speedy development process going forward.

That's... wow. I heard there were some egregious bugs like axes making gunfire noises and zombies coming from the floor, but apperantly even with the influx of free-world zombie games, DayZ stands out. Respect.

(But the reddit thread makes me pull my hair out. An alpha is just that - alpha. Of course there are bugs that make this game almost unplayable! Alpha serves to identify problems and sort them out one by one!)

It's pretty crazy that one guy can work on a mod alone for six months and create a better product then a full dev team in well over twice that amount of time. How the fuck is this game so broken? Why the fuck were they wasting time on skins and expanded interiors when the core of the game is so fucking broken?
Gee, I wonder why mods are easier to make than... you know, building a game from the scratch with a new engine? The massive number of "experts" and "critics" of an alpha state game is just mindboggling.

No wonder they topped the "Top Sellers"-list on Steam during the holiday sale. It's funny how a game that wasn't on sale was the most sold during the sale.

Pitty it sucks. I know its in alpha but its so much worse than the Arma II mod atm. I played for hours straight without finding a weapon or seeing a zombie. I found about 50 caps and cans of soda. Every deer stand was empty, every house was empty (except for caps), out houses. When I finally saw a zombie standing there I walked up to it and punched it for 10 mins while it glitched out then it killed me.

Very underwhelming, I hope with the money the updates come quickly.

Practically the same happened to me, only I found one piece of rotten fruit, no water and ended up traveling for 30 mins and died of hunger and thirst.

Second playthrough ended up with me having two zombies glitch through a house and into the floor and I punched them for 5 mins and both suddenly killed me.

With the game selling this much i'd assume by now they have more than enough money to get work done at a much quicker pace, rather than have lots of money and keep the game at a massive snails pace because I highly doubt all those 800,000 (including you and me) have the same level of time and patience for the game to reach a proper universal (I mean everyone can enjoy it not just a few that think it's great already) playable and enjoyable state.

I'd also hope that the entire fanbase doesn't turn the game into "hold up Z".
