To The Death Kickstarter Launches from Call of Duty and God of War Devs

[kickstarter=scarymostro/to-the-death]
Part beat 'em up, part shoot 'em up, To The Death involves two warriors who just can't let go of a grudge.

A team of game industry veterans who have worked on games such as Call of Duty and God of War has begun a Kickstarter campaign for its upcoming beat 'em up and shoot 'em up game, To The Death.

Two warriors have continued their fight after death in the world of the Crawl as a deep vendetta between the two has not been put to rest. Players alternate controlling each of the two warriors to see a story that impacts both characters. Developer teams Scary Mostro and Section Studios hope to offer a new experience by fusing two genres, as players will be able to both swing a weapon and shoot waves of enemies. To The Death can be played solo, co-op, or in competitive multiplayer. Players also choose abilities as they reach their opponent, finding combinations among different guns, sword moves, and shield upgrades.

Logan Cunningham, best known for his voice acting as Bastion's narrator Rucks, lays out the story of the Crawl on the Kickstarter. The two warriors threaten the balance of the Crawl, which is a "crossroads for past souls after death." After turning their lands to ash, the two warriors continue their battle in this crossroads and will destroy everything in their path. The Crawl's armies will try to take down both warriors, and by the final boss, the two warriors must cooperate to win.

Scary Mostro noted the game is fully functional and playable right now, and it runs at 60 fps. To The Death's estimated delivery is dated for May 2015. It will be be available on Steam for PC, Mac, and Linux. The campaign funding goal is $400,000, and the crowdfunding campaign closes Feb. 19.

i think i will be backing this, the idea sounds really good and i feel kickstarter works best as a game-finisher, like it did with ftl

Whats the point of saying that it runs at 60fps on a PC exclusive? Is it a new buzzword now? If it is they forgot to say that it runs in 1080p too.

I get that some games can be locked at 30fps but thats usually for poorly ported console games.

Now this I like the look of. $750,000 looks like a bit much to raise just to get a console version, but I really hope they can meet it. Between this and Resogun, it looks like PS4 may be the console of choice for Shoot 'em Ups this gen.

Did you post this on the wrong thread? It's a game that is coming out for PC and the funding goal is $400k.

OT: Game looks cool enough... but I don't really understand. Fully playable, runs at 60FPS.... what are they getting funding for exactly? Also, why is the estimated release so far off if it's fully playable right now?

Kickstarters have stretch goals. Goals where if the right amount of funding is achieved, they will add more.

The stretch goal for $750,000 is for it to be on the PS4 and Vita as well.

It's probably 'fully playable' in the sense that they have a working engine and the mechanics are all sorted out, but they need to actually create levels, enemies, audio etc. to have a fully fleshed out title. The animations look a bit naff too, so maybe they will use the time to improve them a bit.

Well the premise sounded good until I saw the gameplay and got that eerie feeling this will just be an infinite grinder without anything to it, and the pedigree of these gents also does not fill me with confidence.

This looks pretty rad. I love shoot'em ups, it's a genre that's been neglected and they seem to already have a pretty nice grasp of what they want to do. I hope they meet their goal. Especially i hope they reach that vita extension, would be an awesome fit

Honestly, they have a better pedigree than most devs who do kickstarter project. If it's not "Old dev who hasn't done anything relevant in years and is mostly recognized only by name", it's indie devs who usually carry one maybe one recognizable figure like a musician or a concept artist from some company.

These guys are all actually professionals and it's not like it's activision, so it's not a call of duty rehash. It's a new thing
