Steam Greenlight Grows By 50

Another day, another dollar and another 50 games have made the cut on Steam Greenlight.

I think we're just about at the point where we can all envision Steam out on the street asking everyone who walks by if they want to be on Greenlight. I have no idea where all these games even come from, but somehow Valve has managed to scrounge up with 50 more that were good enough to get the Greenlight, the first big step toward a release on Steam.

Catlateral Damage [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/131474-Catlateral-Damage-Commercial-Build-Will-Add-Stealth-Endless-Modes] has been getting some pretty positive coverage lately but otherwise, well, let's just say that I'm not exactly trembling with anticipation over the prospect of getting my hands on these games. That's not to say that there aren't any winners in here - there are at least a couple of Russian titles, and there's always the potential for something interesting in those - and to be fair I know nothing about any of the others so I could be overlooking some real gems, but this isn't exactly what I'd call my "Most Anticipated Releases of 2014" list.

With the pickings increasingly slim, I ask once again: Which ones are you looking forward to?

As I do every time one of these huge batches drops, I'll record my thoughts as I go down the list, partly just to help my remember promising standouts.
Between Me And The Night is gorgeous, shame the gameplay looks utterly bland.
I don't like to call things "minecraft clones" but Block Story is really pushing it.
Burning cars looks like the kind of zero effort crap I was hoping Greelight would keep out. Who votes for this crap?
The idea of someone actually paying money for Catlateral Damage makes me die a little inside.
Not only does Edge Of Eternity look incredibly boring, I swear some of the environments in those screenshots were ripped from other games.
Hunting Anubis sounds interesting but it isn't exactly easy on the eyes. (and I mean that literally)
I Want To Be Human looks entertaining. Sadly it also resembles a free flash game and I can't imagine actually paying for it.
Infectonator : Survivors would be much more at home on an app store as a 99 cent time waster rather than trying to be a full game.
Insula looks so much like another Day one: Garry's Incident its almost funny.
Rain World actually looks really really cool, IMO best game of the otherwise shitty batch by a massive margin.
RymdResa looks tortuously boring but I love the music in the trailer.
WORLD END ECONOMiCA is interesting by virtue of being by the author of Spice and Wolf, but the translation looks... iffy.

Overall a very meh batch to me.

Well, Steam did start selling software besides games quite a while ago so I can't see why they should limit Greenlight to games. Seriously, with some of those games that have been released on Greenlight I think I would have more fun looking at the scripts to that drawing software.

However to answer your question. Yes, anything can be accepted through Greenlight unless it's a violation of the ToS (porn, piracy, unlicensed stuff). It's a joke really. It has failed at almost everything it was going to accomplish.

I think it's time Valve just dropped the system entirely. The rate and number at which they've been "Greenlighting" titles suggests that there is little, if any, real filtering of content like it was originally intended. Any pretense of this system doing it's job had gone out the window a long time ago.

Going by the numbers off Greenlight, nearly 25% of the games on there have been greenlit, and there are at least a couple that everyone knows will not be seeing a release (such as Shadow of the Eternal) at all. I'd love to see the ratio of games put into the system compared to games 'released' or greenlit through it.

I agree I've personally voted on over 200 games in the greenlight process and frankly some of the games making it through I just don't understand how. I'd rather see steam be more selective in who gets through as with so many of these games players are going to have massive fatigue from an influx of many poorly made games, reducing the value of games on steam.
