Starbound Beta Patched, No More Character or Ship Wipes

The latest patch for Starbound has introduced a new system that will preserve characters and ships in future updates.

Fans of Chucklefish's long-awaited "Terraria-in-space" open-world game Starbound were beyond ecstatic when the beta dropped late last year [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/130034-Starbound-Beta-Should-Launch-December-4-ish]. They were less ecstatic to find out that their characters and ships would be wiped every time an update to the beta was rolled out. But, you should be ecstatic once more, as the latest patch to the beta has ensured that any future patches will no longer wipe characters or ships (though they may still wipe worlds). Hooray!

The patch features "Absolutely massive changes to disk serialization (sorry reversers), which will allow us to never need to wipe players or ships again, and hopefully never need to wipe worlds again," as well as a wealth of bug fixes and new features, including:

Difficulty levels and permadeath
New techs
The new "Savannah" biome
New objects
New items
New enemy attacks
Random encounters

If you'd like, you can check out the full patch notes right here [http://playstarbound.com/changelog-for-v-furious-koala/].

Starbound has managed to sell over Mass Effect mod [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/131124-Starbound-Sells-One-Million-Copies-While-Still-In-Beta].

I can't say how wonderful this bit of news is

Having seen the starbound game develop over the months has been... interesting, at least from a wanna-be game-dev perspective.

Seeing what the effect of not having a revewable power source for the space ship did to the game in early beta, compared to tree farming now. Its quite interesting.

Indeed, and more balancing needs to be done on that front. The whole idea that tree farming is a superior way to fuel a spaceship than mining better fuels is a bit silly and also not terribly fun. I think they either need to seriously buff the output of fuel from non-coal sources, or else make trees grow much, much slower. Tree farms should be a way to gain the needed fuel, but I don't feel it should be anywhere close to the best way. Of course I don't imagine it will stay, since advanced fuel rods currently have no purpose, or at least none I've ever found.

Still, super happy about the changes and I can't wait to sink my teeth into them!
