35 Percent of All The Pirate Bay's Uploads are Porn

Only TV shows and movies managed to beat the amount of porn uploads The Pirate Bay had last year.

It's no secret that lots of porn materials are littering the internet and torrent sites, but the latest numbers from TorrentFreak revealed just how much smut there is people upload on premiere bit-torrent site, The Pirate Bay. According to the findings, 35% of The Pirate Bay's uploads last year consisted of porn-related materials. This statistic was beaten only by "TV and Movies" which, when combined, managed to take 44% of the total figures. As for other categories, Music only accounted for less than 10%, while video games only managed to account for 2%.

The handy graph below gives us a look at how uploads changed from 2004 to 2013 -- though as you can see, porn always managed to take a big chunk of the share year after year.

Again, people trawling for porn on torrent sites is nothing new; but to think it almost edged out TV shows and movies combined, it just shows us exactly what people use torrent clients for the most.

Are you surprised at all at how much porn people upload? If you don't believe the stats, you can always go to The Pirate Bay yourself and erm, "check" if it's true.

Also, I find it 100% unsurprising that people managed to figure out ways to upload porn to the internet in the year 204, centuries before the internet existed. People really will go to amazing lengths for their porn.

I'm actually really surprised the percentage goes that high, why would you go torrenting pornos illegally and wait for downloads when you get this stuff instantly on hundreds of Youtube like video streaming websites for free.

I can give you two solid reasons off the top of my head.

1. Not every country has access to high speed internet. If you want to fap, you probably want to fap NOW, and not having to wait for your video to buffer solves that issue.
2. Archival purposes. It would suck if your favourite porno was taken down or the site it was hosted on was taken down permanently. It can be really tough to dig up a specific porno from the metaphorical ocean of pornos on the internet.

Truth be told, I'd be more interested in how the porn uploads AND downloads are separated.

Not really. People would want to download movies and TV shows for long train rides and watch it on either a tablet or a laptop, but you wouldn't do that with porn. Porn can just as easily be enjoyed by watching a 5-20 minute clip rather than downloading a 2 hour movie release. I am just guessing, but I don't think there's a whole lot of people who would want to watch an entire movie in one sitting and would be just as satisfied after streaming a variety for about 20 minutes without paying any mind to what passes for a story.

That said I am not sure if this statistics is about uploaded torrent files or if it's about complete file uploads. If' it's the former this could be related to how much is made and ripped/cracked rather than any actual number on how much piracy there is in each division.

i would like to point you at the games part of the graph. games are larger industry than movies or tv shows, with higher revenue than hollywood, yet the piracy rate is much smaller. thats an achievement i guess.

i have to second that. considering that majority of worlds internet traffic is actually porn i was expecting power to take the biggest share.

the difference between 360p and 1080p in porn matters!
No but seriuosly i watch a lot of porn and those streaming websites are unrealiable, crash, remove videos for no reason, ect. they are trouble, and all those ads with viruses. you have less chance to catch a virus from torrenting porn than from advertisement in those websites.

i am not certain but i think torrentfreak counts the reported "finished download" statistics from piratebay. keep in mind that actual numbers are higher because not all torrent clients notify the server that download is finished and the server may not respond/be overloaded and if you download only oen file from many it counts as "still downloading" too.

Well. Most of the usual porn streaming sites have pretty low quality videos, so if you were to want something better the torrent sites make sense for bigger files, I guess.

I'm sure most people love their copy of Dirty Whore Gets Hot Whippings or some other form of high-class, sophisticated media (or whatever internet pirates find sexy) but I'm actually rather suprised that it's that low.

Now, just how many of those downloads came from PS4s?
