Rust Sells 750,000 Copies, Creator Apologizes For Slow Updates

The incomplete alpha version of Rust has sold an astonishing 750,000 copies in just a month and a half, and Garry Newman doesn't seem quite sure why.

It's no secret that I dig Rust, the free-form survival game from Garry's Mod creator Garry Newman, but I'm not so hung up on it that I don't recognize its shortcomings. They're to be expected; it is, after all, an alpha release, so bugs, missing features, generally wonkiness and the occasional server wipe are all part of the package.

But that's not stopping people from throwing money at the thing at an absolutely mind-boggling clip. Earlier this month Newman said in an interview that Rust had sold 250,000 copies [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/131480-Rust-Hits-It-Big-On-Steam-Early-Access] and made roughly 40 percent of what Garry's Mod has earned in its nine-year lifetime in just one month; in a status report yesterday, he revealed that the figure is now up to 750,000 copies sold and two-thirds of GMod's revenues.

"We are blown away by the popularity of Rust so far. It doesn't even seem real yet," Newman wrote. "Our original plan was to release on Steam Early Access, without making a big deal of it, and slowly build up a bigger fan base by releasing regular updates, until we reached a point where we felt the game was ready for a bigger audience - and then start advertising it and bringing more people in."

He described the game's "unjustified popularity" as both a blessing and a curse: A blessing, because every game developer wants to make a hit, but a curse because the tremendous amount of feedback and ideas flooding in is extremely difficult to keep up with. He also expressed concerns that a lot of people might see Rust as a near-complete product and be put off by its rough state as a result.

"We feel like we aren't making it clear enough that the game is Early Access. Rust is still in development. This isn't 95% finished, like a regular beta. This is 10% finished. We've got the bare bone foundations of a game here. We're still developing it," he wrote. "This isn't just is trying to make excuses for putting out a buggy game. This is how it is."

The incomplete, alpha-state but still remarkably playable Rust is available now through Steam Early Access [http://store.steampowered.com/app/252490/] - but consider yourself warned.

Wait. Rust is only 10% complete? Oh Jesus, if I'm having this much fun with a game that bare bones, I can't wait to see what else it can do.

I might pick it up when it comes out but I can't do beta/alpha tests I just play the games until I get bored of them and then don't play them again. It happened with every beta I've ever played.

Waiting very patiently for wasteland 2 to get out of beta.

Wait what, is that an accounting fail or an article fail? 250,000 copies = 40% of GMod revenue, 750,000 = 66%? That's 500,000 copies for a mere 26% extra of Gmod's revenue? They start hosting the download server on quantum SSD's in a building made of gold?

I enjoy the game but you really do have to make your own fun. I have full kevlar and all blueprints/weapons with a decent secure (as it can be) base. This leaves me with nothing to do other than general PvP stuff. Can't wait for more content, didn't realise it was at 10% completion. Assumed 60-70% minimum.

Presumably some approximations on Newman's part, maybe high on one side, low on the other. These things rarely work out to nice, round numbers. And who knows, maybe this has sparked a new interest in GMod too.

The active map itself is only a very small portion of the entire island. I didn't realize that when I first started playing and I wandered off the ranch, spent literally hours just walking through empty territory, trying to find my way back. (I could've suicided, but making it back alive was kind of a matter of principle, y'know?)

I have Rust on my wishlist, I'm going to wait for it to come along a bit more and buy it. It definitely looks fun, and I've heard nothing but good things.

I'm not sure why this is puzzling. The gaming industry is at an obviously crossroad at this very moment. You have the newer FPS crowd that will still throw money at any CoD or BF game and then you have the older gamers. I place myself in the older since I will be coming on 2 and a half decades of gaming. Most of us are tired of railed video games just leading us along with an anti-climatic ending. We want to be left to our own devices and figure out our own fun, not be told what IS fun by a big publisher. Games like DayZ and Rust are exploding because they let us just figure it out. I personally have not picked up Rust, but playing DayZ I can just run around and take screenshots of the landscape. It's what I like. Nobody is telling me how to play it.

I like the look of rust and how it plays even if it was supposed to have working zombies in the game (unlike how shitty Day Z's zombies perform).

Though I won't be getting it (remind me in 4 years time though) for probably a long time I do however watch Frankie's LP's since he's an all around nicer Brit gamer than TB (I don't mind TB but he comes off as a snobby PC only that can be a dick sometimes and droll on in his vids)

here's a good recent video on how to survive the current Rust world with Frankie:

Debating whether or not I want to put myself through this game's premise of basically logging in and praying I can do something without getting punked right off the bat. Interesting game though and even more interesting its only 10% complete.
Good show Mr. Newman, good show.

I'd also probably get it if I knew my friends were, the way I've seen the game work is that you have better odds of survival with friends, especially to build a more stable environment and settlement for you and others, playing by yourself and you have a chance to have your stuff stolen and yourself killed and corpse robbed.
