Xbox One Updates to Improve Storage, Prepare for Titanfall

In a set of two updates, the first coming Feb. 11, Microsoft will fine-tune Kinect voice controls and improve storage space management.

Microsoft will implement its first system update for the Xbox One on Feb. 11, chief product officer Marc Whitten announced today. The update will provide several improvements to the dashboard, Kinect voice commands, and stability. A second update scheduled for Mar. 4 will prepare the console for Titanfall.

Whitten said the company will not be going into the details of the product updates today as he laid out what people should expect to see starting Feb. 11. The update will allow Xbox One users to better view and manage content and storage. Users will be able to control the install lineup and better manage the download queue, including separate queues for games and apps as the two will be separated in the future. Kinect will be able to recognize voice commands better, making the system more responsive and fluid. Furthermore, the update will add a boot progress indicator for users to track updates as they load.

Plenty more updates will be available behind the scenes for developers who build apps and games for Xbox One, but Whitten did not describe what the updates would entail.

The dashboard will also have a battery power indicator on the home screen for convenience in tracking the remaining battery life of controllers. Whitten added that people will be able to use a USB keyboard with the Xbox One starting on Feb. 11. These are apparently "just a few of the many updates" and "surprises" to come next week.

The Mar. 4 update will arrive in time for Titanfall's Mar. 11 launch. The update will "contain many new features and improvements, most significantly to our party and multiplayer systems," Whitten said. Titanfall is a Microsoft exclusive, multiplayer shooter in which players can fight on foot or inside mechs called Titans.

So...still no word on the ability to add an external USB HDD then? I mean, for the PS4 while it sucks that you can't use an external HDD, you can at least change the internal one without voiding the warranty since it only uses a standard SATA II HDD. But with the Xbox One you can't change it so you are stuck with the current size.
I mean heck, the Wii U supported external USBs at launch so why is it taking a computer giant so long to add USB HDD support?

Because titanfall is going to be the best game ever.

I mean, didn't you see the trailers?

and yes, if this doesn't answer your question then welcome to the rest of the gaming community who are beyond tired of hearing how awesome a 6v6 arena shooter with more bots than players is going to be.
I can't believe people are still jumping on all these hype trains so eagerly without playing the FINISHED games. I'm just gonna sit back and watch: either Titanfall is gonna be a decent game to check out on PC, it's gonna be a niche title for FPS and mech fetishists, or it's over hyped crap like Colonial Marines. In this hype game, the only winning move is not to pay(and wait for reviewers and blindly led masses to see if its worth it or not.)

Also, it seems like M$ is dancing around that external HDD deal. They're either secretly preparing to launch a new xbone with a larger HDD or make one with a removable drive. So they can sell that new one to all the fanboys that would buy a second xbone, before they release a patch for externals. It's sound like a stupid idea and, I'm just talking out my thermal exhaust port. Though M$ has done many, many stupid things in the past couple years.

Fun Fact: Even if you installed ALL the games that are currently out for the One, you'd STILL have space left in the internal. So no, I don't think external HDD's are a priority right now.

OP: Awesome. Looks like they're fixing a whole truckload of problems that people were having with the One. But I guess that's not good enough for certain people...

And once more games are out, what then? It feels like you dodged my point in that this is literally the easiest thing they can add in and Microsoft hasn't added it in yet. You could buy all the games you wanted on the eShop when the Wii U came out and you wouldn't fill the internal 32 GB storage, but Nintendo still supported external HDDs at launch. So if Nintendo, a company whose generally viewed as the technologically behind company can get this at launch, then why can't the Xbox One when the company that owns it is Microsoft, a computer giant?

Edit: I'm pretty sure you've seen this as well, but I'll just drop this link here again to make my point.
Point being that if you are going to advertise as being an "All in One machine", and you are forcing people to install the games on the HDDs then make sure that the HDD has enough space, or that there are alternative ways that you can save the full data.

The ability to use external hard drives with a simple USB plug was probably the most revolutionary thing for console gamers ever. People have complained incessantly about the need to buy extremely expensive first party hard drives for their consoles since digital downloads became a thing. Nintendo actually listened to that feedback and basically agreed that it was stupid to outright gouge your customers like that.

I may not necessarily be all about the WiiU, but that kind of move has absolutely made me buy one.

Probably best not to keep it a secret too long. Last time you all wanted to "surprise" us we got always online and #dealwithit... and you got devalued stock prices and dismal sales.

I said it wasn't a priority. I didn't say it shouldn't be done or wouldn't. Also, how do you know it's an incredibly easy thing? Are you a technical dev at Microsoft? Do you know exactly how one could easily add USB support for HDD's and not just that, to make it run smoothly? Do you even know how HDD USB support works even basically?

And even if you put all that aside, it's clear that Microsoft was focusing on a whole lot more than the PS4 is. So naturally some things probably had to get dropped in favor of what they were focusing on. And if we're going to focus on major features missing, did you know the PS4 can't play MP3's or CD's? And they still haven't patched it yet to my knowledge.

Well, thank you microsoft, for once again "astonishing" us with features present in windows 95. How nice of you to allow us to actually see that your OS is so bloated that it takes over 100 GB.

Also you need to update a console to make it run a launch-title-titanfall? what the actual fuck?

well, no, not really.
Xbox is so poorly designed that its OS steals over 100GB of your drive [http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/172472-xbox-ones-500gb-hard-drive-makes-only-362gb-available-to-users], and then there is Over 15 launch titles [http://www.ign.com/wikis/xbox-one/Xbox_One_Launch_Titles] making it not fit into available space.

ALso Xbox is supposed to be multimedia center. So games are hardly the only thing storing in there.
