Space Pirates and Zombies 2 Revealed, Now With Multiplayer

SPAZ is back from the dead, and this time it's got a cargo bay's worth of flashy new upgrades.

The accurately-titled Space Pirates and Zombies was something of an indie hit when it launched in 2011, with fast-paced top-down action and a huge randomly-generated galaxy. It was an impressive debut from a new two-man development team, and its success allowed them to start working on a follow-up. SPAZ 2 brings back the random galaxy and combat-salvaging gameplay of the original, but you might not recognize it at first - the duo at Minmax Games have definitely been busy.

The sequel, at first glance, looks completely different from its predecessor. Gone are the simple 2D graphics, replaced with a beautiful new engine. Combat still plays out like a two-dimensional physics-based space fighter, though the context is just a little different: the galaxy is in shambles after the first game's events, and you'll be competing with hundreds of AI factions to claim what's left. These AI fleets will be forming alliances, taking territory, waging wars, and scavenging for resources just like the player is, resulting in a unique galactic landscape each time you play. You can try to conquer the galaxy on your own, or in local split-screen coop.

You'll be able to put together a fleet and claim territory for yourself, but the moment-to-moment gameplay consists of ship battles that the developers compare to "huge pirate ships battling on an ocean," with emphasis on smart tactics. Destroying your enemies isn't the only benefit to fighting, as you'll be able to dynamically salvage any components that you can find in the wreckage and bolt them onto your own ship on the fly.

The team has been working on SPAZ 2 for over a year, but it's still pre-alpha with no release date in sight. Keep sensors active, though - this'll be one to watch out for.

AI factions forming alliances, and fighting wars huh. Sounds like they threw a little mount & blade into it which can only be a good thing.

I really did enjoy my time with 1st SPAZ and from what i've seen it looks like it can only get better from here.

Ramming looks to be a valid tactic now.

Pluss it looks like there are still zombies to fight, whoo!

I really enjoyed the first game even though I still have yet to finish it. I think i'll be buying this when it comes out, AI fleets forming alliances and fighting similar to mount and blade could be enough to keep me interested as I go through the game. Especially if you can join the alliances, it sounds similar to mount and blade which I loved.

Looks really good, but split-screen multiplayer only?
It says that it features "local split-screen co-op". I don't think listing this (relatively rare) feature on their list means that they don't also have online multiplay though. They're just pointing out that they have a rare feature that people often ask for in other multiplayer games.

So:

-It's a sequel to SPAZ, a game that I loved.
-It's in 3D now
-It has co-op
-If those scenes where a ship attaches parts to itself are anything to go by, you can now design your own ships?!

I think I might just pre-order this, and I've never done that for ANY other game before!

Also, I wonder if the Bounty Hunters will still be around? I didn't see a "(and Bounty Hunters!)" on that title screen like the original SPAZ does

Hopefully they are still around... they provided some of the best ships in the game (Manta Ray FTW). I think because Bounty Hunters were patched in the game at a later date they have a good chance of showing up again.

Damn this is looking good, and completely different from ye olde sprite based SPAZ, well I just hope they can pull it all together in time because this seems like a whole new level.

I liked the first game but only with the cheats ... endlessly going mining and picking up goons got old quickly! Not to mention the endless fucking missions, I went in with the mindset of finishing all the missions but if I did that I wouldn't do anything else.

I think the first game was a good start, if they build of the last game it will be great.

I do have to wonder if they are nervous about no mans sky ...

Well, the first game what pretty shit (for its time, if it was released years ago it would have made for a decent enough game).

I hope they don't fuck up the combat this time, it used to be just an endless grind to get the highest upgrades and best gear and that was all there was to it.

If they can fix it so different weapons are actually good in different situations and against different opponents then this game might actually be worth playing.
I had the same issue with it and the difficulty spikes. "Oh you're 10 tech levels above this area and have the absolute best parts and ships available? Watch as this station wipes you out in 2 volleys"

I never felt like I gained any power in that game, that I was just keeping status quo no matter how many tech levels I had over the enemies in the area. Hopefully they changed that in the second game.

This is a day 1 buy. Frickin love SPAZ 1, I still play it. I'd consider playing it today but apparently TF2 is churning out an update today. Can't miss that. Cross fingers for Natasha buffs!

Edit: update delayed till tommorrow... still got all worked up for TF2, gonna play it anyway.

This is my complaint too, level 3 station? Hah, fuck that, no way i'm burning through that without wasting more resources than I have.
