Final Fantasy VII Boss Theme Recreated With Floppy Drives

Those Who Fight Further, the boss theme from Final Fantasy VII has been recreated by an ensemble of floppy drives powered by custom software.

Depending on who you are you might regard Final Fantasy VII as the best or worst thing to ever happen to the Final Fantasy franchise. Regardless of what you think about the game itself however, there's no denying that it has one heck of a soundtrack. Nobuo Uematsu produced some of his most beloved tracks for the game including one of the series' best bottle themes: Those Who Fight Further.

There have been more than a few versions of this song over the years. Heck, Uematsu himself produced an instrumental <a href=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1idhoApN2s>rock cover of the song with his band The Black Mages. That said, we're going to go on a limb and say that a recent floppy drive rendition of the song may be the most unique one out there. Created by YouTube user MrSolidSnake745, it uses custom software codes by fellow <a href=http://www.youtube.com/user/Sammy1Am>YouTuber Sammy1Am to turn MIDI files into running instructions that allow floppy drives to be used as musical instruments.

According to MrSolidSnake745, the song uses 16 connected floppy drives, double his usual eight. The extra drives were used because the setup was created for the Nexon Computer Museum in South Korea which famously features exhibits highlighting the history and development of computing and gaming. The Those Who Fight Further floppy ensemble will be added to the museum in a few short months as a new exhibit. If nothing else it's definitely a neat way to pay tribute to both games and old computers.

That is indeed technically impressive.

However it still doesnt hold a candle to Omnishred.

In sheer awesomeness.

Floppy music is usually pretty neat. Maybe someday when thumb drives have been replaced by wireless nanobot suppositories, some tech-head will find a way to make music with a literal ton of old sd cards or a lot of cds and an armada of synced microwave ovens.

I still have to say that every Black Mages FF remake IS the definitive version, except for Otherworld. The "dog barking Slayer"(thanks, Spoony) version easily beats an engrish J-pop remake any day.

I always loved the Boss Theme of FFVII, Those Who Fight Further. I always looked forward to Boss Fights just because I enjoyed the song. Part of the reason I consider FFVII to be one of my favorite games was the sound track.

Pretty cool to hear it via a unconventional method. Doesn't quite sound as nice, obviously due to said method, but it's still interesting.

In regards to this being a museum exhibit, I kinda wonder if it will need constant maintenance. I don't know enough about how this whole thing works to be sure, but it seems like it would shred floppy drives if its played much.

I normally am not crazy about the floppy disk versions. I mean I admire their ingenuity and it's a lot of fun but that son is perfect for it and it's well done. It actually sounds a lot better on floppy drives. Maybe I just need to listen to more guitar heavy floppy songs...

(unplugs floppy drive, throws out, plugs in floppy drive from massive crate out back.) As far as museum maintenance goes. It sounds pretty cushy. I imagine they just replace the parts though once every 6 months or something. Plus they probably love their job.

Sounds rather grating, but still, it's a fun idea.

I now look forward to the rendition played solely with spoons.
