They actually don't try to hug each other, since Alyx is averse to that. Only Eli Vance, Alyx's father, suggests that, and we should all know what happened to him.

Speaking of deadly tragedies, it's interesting how many of those are in here: Maria (Gears 2) and Jenny (Darkness) both died right before our eyes. Either Nicole or some other woman died while Isaac was away in Dead Space. Even Skyward Sword's Zelda had a rather grim fate of being "dead" for many years before some kind of Jesus-style resurrection.
