Marvel In Talks With Doctor Strange Directors

Four top directors are being considered, and Marvel's also looking for screenwriters.

It's been a long time coming, but Marvel's beginning to gear up its efforts to put its mystic Doctor Strange on the big screen. Last time we heard anything about this, Johnny Depp [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/131328-Marvel-Considers-Johnny-Depp-for-Doctor-Strange-Role] was in the running for the top spot. Now Marvel's in talks with four directors to bring this project to life. It's also looking for writers, and has its metaphorical eye on some Kung Fu Panda alumni.

The director candidates include Glenn Berger [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0028764/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1], both from the Kung Fu Panda franchise, are in the screenplay camp, but nobody's signed any contracts yet as far as we know.

Marvel's Sorcerer Supreme is a fairly heavy hitter in the Marvel universe, but so far he's not enjoyed a movie adaptation, though he has had his own cartoon and a full length TV feature. If Marvel's franchises hadn't taken off in a big way, this wouldn't be even a ghost of a possibility. Now Marvel has one or two blockbusters under its belt, as well as some soon-to-screen fan favourites [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/132338-Guardians-of-the-Galaxy-Full-Length-Trailer-Is-Hilarious-and-Familiar], it looks as if Doctor Strange is next on the agenda.

I think my interest in this is going to massively hinge on the lead casting. No Depp pleeeeeeeease! Plus I hope they don't try and de-mystify him and try to convince us his powers aren't magic but some kind of (probably Asgardian-level for reasons) technology.

Finaly some progress. I have wanted a Doctor Strange movie ever since I saw Thor and started to think that they could pull it off.

I could not agree more. As much as I love what they have done with Thor I don't like that they seem to have made Asgard simply have high levels of tech instead of magic. And I also don't think Depp would be a good fit but he would be a better choice than Gorden-Levit.

I do think they have missed a trick with introducing Strange tho. I would have thought that Guardians of the Galaxy would have been a good way to introduce him as out of all the characters they have introduced (and Ant-man) so far Strange is the only one (with the exception of Thor maybe) who could run into them. He does have to protect the whole universe after all and he does not exactly stay on earth all the time.

My interest is going to hinge upon which origin/backstory they are using for the doctor.

Depp would be the least interesting possible choice. Besides one look at Robert Downey Jr's escalating pay packet should dissuade them from going with someone who would cost that much.

I do wonder... if they find the 'right' team for this, will they announce it before or after Guardians of the Galaxy is released. I can't help but think that the future of the more off the wall Marvel movies will hang somewhat on the success of that one.

My vote is for the Mad Men dude. I like that he will give him the 90's athletic look while still being believable as a smart guy.

Please, no more skinny hipsters.

Good points, I also do not want to see Dr Strange demystified either as a character that is sorcerer supreme, that would be a major let down.

Right now Marvel's Ultimate universe the path is always the same, where enough tech and a punch to the face will solve any problem? Well I really hope the writers will do better than that.

This movie would be a real chance to put some magic and wonder back into the universe where anything is possible. : )

Great to hear some progress for this movie. Sounds like they've got some good talent to go with this project. Hope there will be more news down the road as we get closer to SDCC.

Believe it or not, I was halfway expecting (since magic was the next thing that Marvel wanted to introduce to the Cinematic Universe, in Phase 3) that Doctor Strange would turn out to be a SHIELD agent and would have been responsible for Coulson's resurrection (after all, every time someone mentions Tahiti, he has been programmed to say "It's a magical place"...

Then again knowing Joss Whedon that was probably a big red herring, especially after he denounced the possibility of a LMD... Either way, I've been hoping for this news for ages, so colour me happy and interested :).

I really don't want Depp in this. Disney need to realise he doesn't sell like he used to. I'm surprised they haven't tried to put him in Guardians. They keep plowing out Pirates films about him. He was great in the first because he was a secondary character But he got more and more outlandish as films went on and all the stories were about him, and I would not like that in the Marvel universe.

I still can't believe fucking Ant-Man is getting a movie before The Sorcerer Supreme. What are the chances of me seeing Dormammu as a major Marvel villain in my lifetime?

Because look at the guy:

I have no idea why Ant-Man is even getting a movie period. I loved marvel and even I never knew much about him. Strange really should have had a prime movie spot before someone that barely anyone outside of comic fans knew of. Strange was always more well known then Ant anyways. Plus Dormammu and Shuma-Gorrath seals that for me. I am curious to see what they will do with Blade and Daredevil in the future though, and Ms. Marvel, and Rulk, and many others I knew of before I had to go onto wikipedia to refresh my memory as to why Ant-Man was important and needed his movie so badly.

That being said, I really look forward to the Dr. Strange movie.

I'm so conflicted right now... As much as I want a live-action Dr. Strange movie, I having a hard time picturing any form of Mr. Depp as Strange himself... But, other than that, I don't have much of a problem with the possible choices of directors right now... and I'm still looking forward to this possible movie...
*realizes this movie will probably come out sometime after Ant-Man movie*
Huh... So, we're going from well-know to not-so-well-know to semi-well-known then, in terms of movies?
...Well, okay then...

Well in the Marvel Universe Hank Pym was one of the founding members of the Avengers, and was the creator of Ultron, one of the most dangerous villains in the Marvel Universe.

well Daredevil has the Netflix Original series coming out 2015... don't think any of the others yet are definite.

Personally, can't see Blade slotting into MCU as it stands at the moment.
