Mage: The Ascension 20th Anniversary Kickstarter Begins

Onyx Path Publishing has launched a Kickstarter campaign to publish a deluxe 20th anniversary edition of Mage: The Ascension, featuring updated and new material.

It has been 20 years since the first publication of Mage: The Ascension, and Onyx Path Publishing wants to celebrate this anniversary with the release of a special edition. To that end, the team has just launched a Kickstarter campaign that has already blown past its $70,000 funding goal with over $100,000 raised.

The deluxe edition will be leather-bound, gold-edged, and full-color, and feature a silk bookmark and an embossed cover. The contents consolidate material from the first, second, and revised editions, as well as Sorcerer's Crusade and Dark Ages, and include both new and updated material, as well as simplified and clarified rules.

In Mage: The Ascension, players take on the role mages - but these are not your typical fantasy wizards. Set in the supernatural horror World of Darkness universe, Mage leans towards the metaphysical and mystic side of magic and even touches upon philosophy, science and religion.

This is the team's 10th Kickstarter campaign, having raised over $1,700,000 from the platform in the past. Two stretch goals have already been reached, and a third, at $120,000, will surely follow shortly. If that third stretch goal is reached, all backers who pledged $35 or more will receive a 60,000 word quickstarter adventure PDF.

*rubs eyes* 20 years? 20 years?!

Because what, when I woke up this morning The Powers That Be decided I wasn't feeling old enough already? What have I been doing with myself?

[ steps aside, take a quick inventory of life-in-general ]

Alright, fine. Fine. But I don't have to like feeling like Rip-gorram-Winkle.

Also, if you'll pardon my wheezy old fart rant, but "leather-bound, gold-edged, and full-color, and feature a silk bookmark and an embossed cover?" Sounds like it's meant to never actually hit the table. You keep it in a humidity-controlled display case in the dark.

That's consistent with my memory of the game: fascinating concept, outstanding production values, beautiful artwork, evocative writing... and incredibly frustrating, almost totally unplayable rules. As a work of art, it was brilliant. As a tabletop RPG, it was a disaster.

I still absolutely love my MTA Tarot deck, though.

I loved this game, played it for many years (along with the rest of them), in person and online, but like most Storyteller games, the rules were only as good as the group you had to play them with, since they were intentionally open to vast amounts of interpretation. Might not have been quite as noticeable when you were dealing with vampires and werewolves (even though they had plenty of issues at times), but when you're dealing with manipulating the fabric of reality you either had to come to a consensus at the table, just do what the Storyteller said, or spend the whole session arguing.

Or, like my groups, some mixture of all three.

I'm sure I'll have to pick this one up, since I passed on the physical copies of Vampire and Werewolf 20, but Mage was definitely my favorite in the series.

Same here. I didn't get V20 until later and on PDF and I was impressed with the quality. I pledged for the W20 PDF but it was more because I liked what White Wolf did. I am not that into Werewolf and truth be told, I didn't even read the book - just skimmed it. But 10 minutes after the M20 Kickstarter was launched I pledged for a physical copy. I just like the game so much. Also, when on 27th they announced the game was submitted to Kickstarter, I changed my avatar in honour of that. Will be changing back after the end of the campaign, but until then, I'm magickal, baby!

Cairn-killing, Wyrm-sucking man-skin. :p

I wish I had ponied up for WtA20 when they first launched it. That book was so smexy looking. Similar regrets with the new Demon. Gnostic technocracy FTW!

... anyone heard about what the hell is going on with Exalted 3rd ed? I feel like it's been delayed a disproportionately high amount of times, and I don't know whether to find that comforting that it's likely being better balanced and play-tested than before, or disconcerting that it may have potential production woes and ultimately suffer in quality.

Normally, I like White Wolf. I really dig the urban fantasy gothic-y (a bit less so in new) setting they have but I feel their new releases ramped up the quality. Mummy was quite interesting, Demon is also really good. The X20s are a work of art and deserving lots of praise. A bit older but still - the Night Horrors series was really awesome. All in all, WW seem to be doing better and better with the books. I'd advise pledging to their kickstarters - seems there are no downsides.
