Game of Thrones Rap Album Drops Like Its Dragonfire Hot

HBO commissioned ten hip-hop artists to write Westeros-inspired raps to promote the upcoming fourth season of the hit fantasy series.

If you're counting down the days for the next season of Game of Thrones to start, HBO has a little something that might tide you over until then. Catch The Throne: The Mixtape was released by the network earlier today over SoundCloud, and features ten tracks by rap artists including Common, Big Boi and Wale.

The album can be streamed from SoundCloud for free, for those curious what the war for the Iron Throne sounds like when translated into rhymes and beats. You can hear the first track up top, and the rest <a href=https://soundcloud.com/catchthethrone>here.

Most of the tracks start out with dialogue samples from the show, and if nothing else it makes you realize that many of the characters of Westeros wouldn't be too out of place in modern rap albums. After all, nobody defines big pimping like Tyrion Lannister.

The worst idea ever I mean that is the most unfitting music to game of thrones and they decided to make an entire album out of it. Led Zeppelin sung about Tolkien and now some "artists" that can neither sing nor play instruments make shit rap abou GoT not because of the love for the source material but cause they got paid to do so. Probably did not even read the books.

You know, the above video might not be 'proper rap' but it's a damn sight more fun. But to be honest, I can see how they put Rap and Westeros together, it's a gritty setting for an arguably gritty genre. Maybe I was just expecting something more, what do they call it? "Nerdcore"?

Maybe that's just me. Maybe some of the rappers are actual fans of the books/tv series... but more than likely I'm just a jaded young man who doesn't think that commissioned rappers might be into ASOIAF, not enough to put actual heart into the writing. Oh look, I accidentally opinioned and it's not even breakfast time.

I cannot put in words how much I'm not interested in that. In all fairness, it might be that I'm just not into rap music of any kind - after all, I quite enjoy the countless Song Of Ice And Fire-inspired metal songs. But apparently I'm not the only one who finds this grossly unfitting, and I find that very comforting.

There's also the difference between artists paying tribute to a work they enjoy and a special commission. Not saying the latter must be bad, but the enthusiasm that goes into the former usually shows.

How odd it is that you dislike rap music and also rap music.

OT: Arya's Prayer is the only track that shows the artist has a HUGE soft spot for the source material, and to a lesser degree I find Mother of Dragons and Iron Throne to be faithful to the themes of GoT. The rest? Ehhh. I enjoy Daddy Yankee's combination of reggaeton with whatever stringed instrument is in the beat (mandolin?). I'm hugely disappointed in the tracks by Wale and Common, though. Common sounds off beat on the hook, and his lyrics lack almost any connections to GoT. At least Wale, while retaining the weak connection Common had, rides the beat tightly, a wonderful remix of the opening theme. But honestly, anyone who's into Game of Thrones should add Arya's Prayer to their playlist, it's a perfect tribute to the series.
