The Flash Costume Revealed For Upcoming Arrow Spin-Off

The Flash's costume teases superheroism over brooding realism, which implies a unique tone for The CW's latest pilot.

In recent years, it's seemed like live-action superhero shows have an aversion to giving their characters superhero costumes. Arrow's Oliver Queen wears a far more practical outfit than his original comic book counterpart, and it took Smallville a decade to finally put Tom Welling in a Superman suit. So when Arrow's spin-off pilot The Flash actually gives its title character an honest-to-God superhero costume, you can be pretty certain that the times are a-changing.

The Flash tells the story of DC Comics' resident speedster Barry Allen, and will be set in the same universe as The CW's Arrow. Allen (played by Grant Gustin) already made his debut in Arrow's second season, although not in a superpowered capacity. The CW is saving his actual superhero origin for The Flash's pilot, after which I assume Gustin and Arrow's Stephen Amell can do back-and-forth guest appearances.

I've never personally seen an episode of Arrow to speak of its quality, but the internet consensus seems largely positive. That's promising enough, but The Flash also has DC's Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns on board as executive producer, showing a high level of support from DC Comics itself. That being said, only The Flash's pilot has been greenlit so far, so we'll have to wait and see if it succeeds or <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/110007-NBC-Turns-Down-Wonder-Woman-Pilot>goes the way of the Wonder Woman series.

Barry Allen was a lot of fun on Arrow, so I'm hoping that kind of energy can translate to his own show. I love me some crossovers, so hopefully if this goes well, we can get some city-spanning event episodes every now and then between Arrow and the Flash.
As long as they don't use that terrible "whimsical" music they used in "The Scientist", it will be fine.

I never grew up with the Barry Allen flash. The most I know about him is the Wally West version from the Justice League cartoon. can I expect something similar to that goofball, or does Allen have his own style?

I hope this does well.

The guy who played Barry Allen in Arrow seemed like he could pull it off.

As long as they go with the nerdy, makes fun of villains as he beats them, type of Flash.

Arrow and smallville are very different, smallville is very PG13 ... I mean it has dark tones (like some shit lex pulls) but Arrow feels much darker. Maybe it's just the saturation, it's like an episode of scrubs when a famous guy comes in and JD says something like "if life was more like a sitcom" and the whole colour palate seems to change to a much more vibrant almost pastel look ... I can remember the episode so clearly but I can't remember the name of the famous actor to show you what I mean.

ANYWAY, I prefer the darker version of things. Too many shows these days are these happy wonderful places, I like the darkness of arrow ... I'd love to see a smallville with the darkness.

Barry is more of a straight man. He's got a funny side and he's not the typical dark and broody kind of hero, but he's no Wally West. Some people say he's boring (I have a friend who calls him Brown Bread Barry). I quite like him, though. No doubt he'll be a bit of a mix between the two main Flashes, but I know Geoff Johns is a big fan of Barry.

Classic comics Barry Allen had a subtle "dry" sense of humor, at least when he was written well. Like many Silver Age heroes, he was a genius and pretty straight-laced, so I would guess he'll be a bit looser in this interpretation. He's got to be better than the John Wesley Shipp version. (Right?)

I'm just re-watching Season 1 of the Justice League animated series. Flash was pretty much portrayed a one-dimensional womanizing jerk, so I'm hoping that's not the direction they go in the new series.

Keep watching it. Flash becomes one of the best characters after a couple of major turning points in the series.

not to mention he is the heart of the team and the only sense of comic releaf in some of the darkest EPs

OT: If he acts as good as he did in Arrow I'll be excited. I just wonder how the super speed will look

I'm looking forward to this. DC sucks with movies, but their live action shows are shaping up to be good. Just as good as their animated shows, IMO.

Dark Knight was pretty good but I agree that their tv series seems way more interesting than marvel's.

It's pretty funny how much different Marvel and DC are in this respect. DC does awesome TV Show, and really great animated shows and movies. Marvel (the actual Marvel Studios Production house) makes awesome movies, but terrible animated shows. If you were to combine them into one studio, they would be unstoppable. I agree though, the recent Batman movies were the high points for them, but they just have so many hits against them at this point. I personally like Man of Steel, but it seems I one of the few and proud on that respect... though I have had enough Zach Snyder to last me a lifetime.

Its tough to say. This Barry Allen seemed kind of like a chill intelligent type with a joke or two. From what I've been able to learn about Barry is that Wally is definitely a goof off and Barry can crack a joke every now and then he is more serious minded than Wally. To a majority of the people that know these heroes but don't read comics the DCAU is pretty much THE versions of the characters we know. I"m sorry but to me John Stewart is the Justice League lantern. Not Hal Jordan.

Count me among the people who like Man of Steel brother. That pretty much seems to be the case. DC rules the airwaves with its shows. Even if they don't last long (R.I.P. Young Justice) but for the most part since the Batman Animated series their shows have been bullseyes. As well as most of their animated movies which I actually like that they are adapting famous story arcs and graphic novels. If The Flash is as good as Arrow the final piece of the puzzle just needs to be put in place for one hell of a TV universe. A show named Amazon is supposed to take place in this same universe and Diana herself has been planned to show up in Arrow at some point in time. Marvel may have their cinematic universe but DC will have its sprawling TV universe. Which funny enough I like S.H.I.E.L.D. and all but I think it is worse than Arrow. They need to start brining in those supervillains they keep making.

Actually it looks a lot more home made (Kinda, sweater-ish rather than armor/mesh) which feels more in line with what I'd expect from this universe they're building.

Honestly, I'm really hoping both this new canon and their new animated universe canon takes off. I like Arrow, and I like how there was some character development over the course of War, and the prospect that the former could link into a larger universe and the latter could overcome my usual problem with DC's animated movies by putting it more in line with their animated shows (complete story arcs in each installment with persistent character growth) gets me rather excited for these line ups.

The Man of Steel one... less so.

Also, I'm just happy to see Flash and Green Arrow (and potentially Wonder Woman) getting screen time after 25 years of Batman/Superman/Justice League dominating DC's line. I love sharing this list to explain why I want more variation in the limelight: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_based_on_DC_Comics
