Vote Now in the Final Round of March Mayhem 2014

The Final Round of March Mayhem 2014 is finally here. Two developers enter, one leaves a winner.

final round of March Mayhem 2014 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tournaments/standings/11]. You've narrowed it down to two competitors, and now we're in the final stretch. This is where we crown the winner of the whole thing, someone is leaving this competition a champion. You get to pick who exactly wins it all. You've eliminated fourteen developers, some of them independent and some of them AAA. Major developers have fallen at the hands of some less than major creators.

Lucas Pope surprised everyone when he defeated GameFreak and Galactic Cafe, creators of Pokemon X&Y and The Stanley Parable respectively, but in the end lost to Firaxis. Telltale Games met some stiff competition in the early rounds in former winner Mojang and Tim Schaeffer's Double Fine, but in the end lost out to the powerhouse Valve.

Ultimately we're left with Valve and Firaxis, both AAA and both March Mayhem finalists. Don't hesitate, make sure to get in there and vote [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tournaments/standings/11].

The final round of voting has begun! Vote now for maximum enjoyment. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tournaments/standings/11]

If you don't know who you should vote for, we suggest that you get into the forums and discuss who exactly should be the recipient of your vote. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/660.845611-Round-4-1-Valve-Corporation-vs-3-Firaxis]

Here is the final match-up that will decide the winner:

Valve Corporation vs. Firaxis

Valve, already a two-time winner of March Mayhem, is making their appearance once again in the finals. They defeated a company that doesn't exist anymore with Irrational. They then faced another two-time winner in BioWare and came out as victors. In the previous round they met and beat Telltale Games, a fierce competitor that had their own share of upsets. Now they're up against the powerhouse that is Firaxis.

Valve's competition is pretty stiff this year with Firaxis. In 2013 Firaxis came out with XCOM: Enemy Within [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/10729-XCOM-Enemy-Within-Review], which was more popular than The Beatles, at least around Escapist HQ. This year they've met some pretty stiff competition with Nintendo in the first round. For most developers this would have been the kiss of death, but not for Firaxis who rolled over the powerhouse. They then met with Volition, the creator of what some consider to be the game of 2013 in Saints Row IV, but alas Volition was not up to the competition and lost handily to the underdog. Lucas Pope was their next competition, he was considered to be the Indie developer that could but in this case couldn't take Firaxis. They now meet Valve, an odds on favorite, in the finals.

What exactly did Valve publish this year?

*crickets*

Thought so.
Continued to be a company that is a shining example of how to so business.in this industry while also being a titan. Continued to aingle handedly maintain the PC gaming market via the Steam service. I don't really agree, but it isn't like Valve does nothing.

Please can we let Firaxis win? I know Valve is Valve, but do we really want them winning AGAIN?

Looks like Valve's going to win this year...again.

I'd really love Violation to win this year though since I don't recall them winning at all in previous years and well since Valve has let open the floodgates they aren't exactly doing so spiffingly well in terms of looking great.

Don't agree with me on that last part?, take a look:

Yep, my thoughts as well. Some of what they do would be called out had it been done by someone else but, hey, it's Valve so it's all good. Can't say I'm surprised though.

DotA 2.

...and?
*thinking*

Well, fuck. I forgot about DotA. I still maintain that a majority of the votes being cast for them isn't by DOTA 2 fans, but rather Steam users.

I'll never understand why people think Valve is some shining example of whats right in the gaming industry. The fuck people over just as much as everyone else, yet when Valve does it people just sweep it under the rug. Like that bullshit EULA that Origin has that everyone jumped on their shit for, guess who had almost exactly the same EULA? Steam. The thing they didn't have, the anti-arbitration clause, was added in later as part of a Steam update. Don't want to agree to the update? Too fuckin bad, you get told that you can delete all your games and uninstall Steam.

When EA did that it was considered a gigantic pile of shit that it was. When Valve did it everyone tried to play dumb and go "Well, they're just followin the industry standard."

Over the past two years, and not counting all of the additions, updates, and features added to Steam as well as their behind-the-scenes efforts with SteamOS, SteamMachines, Steam Controller, Oculus VR, Source 2, and unannounced projects:

Dota 2
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
The International 2012 and 2013 (as well as other tournament hosting)
Well over a dozen major "event" updates across several titles
Pipeline
Several Linux and Mac OS ports of their own titles

So....
A hell of a lot?

I'd give it to Firaxis this year. I know we all love Valve and everything, but Steam's been kind of a mess lately.

Actually, Valve publishes at least one sucesful game every year. every single year. for over 10 years. thats not a record any other publisher has.

I wish Valve would just admit that Half-Life 3 is never going to happen. But of course, that would be killing the goose that lays the golden egg.

A marginally above-average MOBA, with a community that is notoriously terrible even by the standards of the notoriously-terrible-community-accumulating genre that is MOBAs.

Voted for Firaxis.

Cant help but think that this year if EA had launched DOTA 2 and at the same time had all the rubbish going on with greenlight, rip offs of games and dodgy early access messes they wouldnt have had the free ride to the final Valve had.

Haven't really paid attention to march madness this year but figured I'd throw a vote for firaxis, enemy within expansion pleased me greatly. That I'm no big fan of valve as game devs further cemented my choice.
