Super Smash Bros. 3DS Launching in Summer, Wii U Coming in Winter

Super Smash Bros. 3DS and Super Smash Bros. Wii U are different games with similar mechanics, different stages, and the same character roster.

In a Nintendo direct presentation, Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai announced the company's planned release for both Super Smash Bros. 3DS and Super Smash Bros. Wii U. The 3DS version will launch this summer while the Wii U version will launch this winter, possibly around holiday season.

While the versions will be different, the character roster will be identical for both the 3DS and Wii U. There's no knowing how many characters left we have yet to see. Announced tonight are both new challengers [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/133595-Zero-Suit-Samus-Sheik-and-Yoshi-Return-in-Super-Smash-Bros-3DS-and-Wii-U].

Super Smash Bros. 3DS will mostly run at 60 frames per second; some Pokemon and assist trophies will move at 30 frames per second. The list of stages will differ somewhat. Some stages, like the tournament-favored Battlefield, will be available on both the 3DS and Wii U. These stages will have different designs for each system. Other stages will be available for one system or the other. The presentation showed footage of the following stages for the 3DS: Reset Bomb Forest, 3D Land, Spirit Train, Gerudo Valley, Arena Ferox, Tortimer Island, Living Room, Prism Tower, Rainbow Road, Find Mii, Balloon Fight, and Jungle Japes. Sakurai then displayed the following Wii U stages: Mario Galaxy, Pyrosphere, Town and City, Boxing Ring, Pilot Wings, Skyloft, Windy Hill, Garden of Hope, Wii Fit Studio, Palutena's Temple, and Halberd.

Boss characters from other games will appear in Super Smash Bros, Sakurai announced. The Wiley's Castle stage includes the Yellow Devil from Mega Man 2, and it will assemble on stage and obstruct the match. Players can attack the Yellow Devil, but only its sole eye is a weak spot. The player who gets the last hit on Yellow Devil causes an explosion that hurts all opponents. Sakurai noted that boss characters from other games will make an appearance in stages as well.

Both the 3DS and Wii U versions will have online multiplayer modes that allow players to try "whatever style" they'd like to play. When playing online with strangers, player can choose from For Fun mode or For Glory mode. The former does not include the Final Destination stage, and the stage will be selected randomly. For Glory mode is a one-on-one mode on the Final Destination stage with no items. Wins and losses will be recorded for this stage. In addition, all stages have a Final Destination version.

Finally, the 3DS has its own mode called Smash Run. Players explore and fight under a five-minute time limit, collecting powerups, and up to four players can play at a time.

That doesn't even make sense, why would you release the thing that will get people to buy a Wii U... second?

Just watched the Direct...and while I loved everything in it, my fears seem to be more confirmed. I think Little Mac is replacing Captain Falcon, which means F-Zero is pretty much dead now. T^T

Still, releasing the one that would move the other system after the other is gonna detract from sales. Especially since Sakurai confirmed that Smash Run is exclusive to the 3DS version. Other than that, loved Greninja, so take that Delphox and Chestnaught trainers, my Gen 6 starter is playable in Smash Bros. >:D

Holiday season. It's kind of smart, actually...3DS sales are unlikely to cannibalize Wii U sales (since the Wii U version will probably going to have better netplay and expanded features and I don't think people are going to hold 3DS tournaments), and focusing on handheld games in the summer, when people are on vacation and bring their handhelds with them, while putting Wii U games in the winter, when people are at home for the holidays (perhaps stuck in their home if it's snowing) and pushing one of their most popular games during the time people are considering purchasing a console.

interesting; I can totally see getting the 3DS version out first due to the fact that it would require less work. My guess is that the Wii U version is going to have something BIG for an exclusive mode alongside the music selection. Sakurai and Nintendo aren't stupid when it comes to their own games.

I do like how Bayonetta now has competition in the weaponized footwear department.

I don't think they'll remove Captain Falcon, he has many fans! Well technically every character has many fans. Except Ice Climbers ^^
Thing is though, unless they give him a different moveset, then they might cut him out. The game comes out in summer for the 3DS, so not many more characters since Shiek and Zero Suit have been made their own characters, and then we've got Charizard and Greninja now. Mainly it's because of Little Macs regular special move, and then there's the fact that he has the Knock-Out punch (which makes him really OP if you ask me). Nintendo seems to be incorporating everything about the Fabulous Falcon into other franchises and characters and leaving the Falcon with nothing much. T^T

In other news, Ridley and Dark Samus confirmed to not be playable characters. Former is a stage hazard and the latter is an assist trophy.

Also, characters no longer transform in the middle of the fight... except if they are Pokémon because logic doesn't really make any sense in the first place.

Yeah...sure...delay the Wiiu version. And announce exclusive content for the 3ds. Because its not like the Wiiu could need some games. Seriously...is Nintendo still struggeling with HD or what?

Little Mac looks massively overpowered. Counter, Instant K.O.-attack, Dash, Charge up attack...
I wouldn't cry dismay so soon.

People have been waiting for ANYTHING Smash for a long time.

3DS is definitely the more established platform.

It makes at least significant sense to release the 3DS version sooner, and display the features for it. In my view, surely it's risk aversion; it's getting out the verison that simply has more platforms in hands to bump profits better, but the product is still definitely interesting, at current glance.

And there's not much in the way of exclusive content (only recalling Smash Run atm). At least for what matters; characters are same accross platforms, while are different (online may be so as well).

I just checked and Captain Falcon wasn't actually shown in any of the trailers for Brawl. So either he's going to be shown at E3 or he's a secret character. Remember Sakurai isn't actually showing about half the roster.

Honestly though, I'd just want confirmation that he's gonna be in it seeing as at this point he's honestly a legacy character and it seems like Nintendo is trying to throw the F-Zero series under the rug quite a bit. T^T
*goes back to playing F-Zero GX on GameCube*

Well, we'll know for sure when the 3DS version comes out. Falcon has always been an unlockable secret character, and he has never actually been in any trailers or openings so I don't think we should worry.

[EDIT]He was in the opening for melee

This probably was the best move they could make when they announced two versions. The 3DS one will be easier to make, and giving them a gap will mean the minimal amount of cannibalized sales.

That being said, it also gives me the feeling the 3DS version is going to be the "test" version. They use this to test character balance and online and all that stuff...

Wait, they're only showing half of the roster until release? Where did you hear that from?

I can't remember exactly, and it may be a bit more than half, but they're definitely not showing everything before release as to not spoil. And seeing as he isn't announcing characters on Miiverse and the only big event before the 3DS release is E3 I don't think he'd be able to.

I doubt there will be many more new characters announced after this. The focus seems to be on expanding on the characters they do have, which is nice.

And Smash Run looks amazing, given that it's essentially the mode City Trial from Kirby Air Ride, and I had SO much fun with that as a kid. I don't know how well it will translate in the end but it should work pretty well.

Once the 3DS version is out and when we're around back-to-school, we'll likely hear about all of the exclusive Wii U features. Since they're going to release the 3DS version is makes sense to sell us that one first and let us stew in anticipation...granted, if the Wii U and 3DS versions have the same roasters, I can't wait to see what other (if any) newcomers are still in the pipeline...the 3DS pitch gave us a glimpse of Charizard and Greninja so maybe when the game is released we'll see console-oriented newcomers (again, if there are still newcomers we don't know about yet).

Aaaaaaaaaaaaanywho...HYPE I WANT THIS GAME NOW PLEASE. Since most of you are talking about how Little Mac will likely be OP, Villager will likely be the asshole character.

As much as I want to see the full roster before release, I can appreciate them not wanting to show off everything. I like that air of mystery but still want some confirmation...seeing those Kremlings on Smash Run mode has me really hopeful that K Rool will be playable but it would still be nice for him to be a pleasant surprise.

Well, alright then... Like most "some" people, I'll get the 3DS version and play that throughout the summer... Then, once the Smash Bros. Wii U bundle is announced for the holiday season, I'll but that and play that throughout the coming winter...

Damn it, Nintendo... You knew how my mind would work with a situation like this... and that's why I still love you guys...
