Styx: Master of Shadows Demonstrates Stealth, Goblin-Style

Styx: Master of Shadows takes stealth gameplay to new heights - or lows, depending on your perspective.

Remember Styx, the goblin anti-hero from Of Orcs and Men? No? He was... well, he's a goblin and he steals things. It's a background that makes him conveniently well-suited to go solo in an upcoming stealth-based prequel, Styx: Master of Shadows. Without his militant orcish ally, Styx will be forced to stay out of sight as he pulls off the greatest heist his high-fantasy world has ever known.

A parcel of new screenshots reveals some eye-catching scenery. Styx's target is the Tower of Akenash, a citadel that reaches for miles into the sky. That means plenty of verticality in the level designs, which claim to be open enough that players can approach problems from many different angles. Styx isn't much of a fighter, so he'll have to climb, sneak, and crawl through any paths he can to avoid patrolling guards. It's like Thief, if Garrett was three feet tall.

Styx: Master of Shadows comes from Cyanide Studios, the same developer that introduced Styx in Of Orcs and Men. It doesn't like this prequel shares much with its predecessor aside from the engine, though: the action-RPG mechanics seem to be replaced by third-person (and maybe first-person?) stealth. Styx snuffs out torches, distracts guards, and hides bodies like a pint-sized Sam Fisher. He's also got a bit of an addiction to a magical substance called Amber, so he's got a few more tricks up his sleeve than you'd expect from a typical goblin rogue.

Styx: Master of Shadows is in development for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Cyanide burned me with Impire. I don't know if I can trust them again. And Of Orcs and Men was something I was actually interested in, at least in terms of the flip on the usual RPG protaganist, but I can't go on trailers alone. So, same again so far, trailer looks good but that's about it.

Looking nice, although I'd hope the goblin doesn't grunt and laugh quite as much during the actual gameplay. It would make stealth pretty difficult.

Okay, that looks pretty neat. I shall keep an eye out for this! I do like me some stealth.

On the one hand, it's a stealth game with a goblin. On the other, it's made by Cyanide, who've only made one decent game (Blood Bowl 1) and even then, it is still riddled with bugs and missing about half of the content from the boardgame.

I'll wait till a review comes out.

I freaking love stealth games so I'll definitely keep an eye on this.
How were the stealth sections in Of Orcs and Men?

Woo boy, can't wait for more awkward controls and terrible voice acting.
not to mention the inexplicable use of modern speech in a high fantasy game, punctuated of course with liberal use of the word fuck and it's many variations.

Sorry, but no. Of Orcs and Men burned me bad.

"Fool me twice" and all that.

This looks really cool, I've had Of Orcs and Men on my Steam wishlist for ages but I've never got around to trying it. I'll have to keep an eye on this and also maybe get round to trying Of Orcs and Men.

They were decent to good, far better than the rest of that game. Nothing all that spectacular, but pretty entertaining.
If the stealth sections in this game are of the same quality, it'll probably be worth picking up eventually but I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you.
although they weren't really stealth sections, but more like regular sections where you could stealthily trim off the enemy line
except for the one where you gotta kill the captain of the guard
that was pretty cool

Looks fun but I hope the game allows for the option to do pure stealth. A thief that kills stuff is not a thief he is just a thug.

I enjoyed Of Orcs and Men quite a lot, surprisingly, even to the point where I played it twice, and this looks really interesting, and even though I liked the "relationship" between the two characters in the first one, I kinda look forward to the soliloquies, which were also kinda fun.

This guy isn't just a thief though, which is why that isn't in the name, he does a fair share of killing.
