Harry Potter Meets James Bond in KINGSMAN

Colin Firth and Michael Caine train the next generation of 007s in new Matthew Vaughn actioner

Well, here's a new frontrunner for coolest-sounding thing I didn't know I'd always wanted: The first trailer has dropped for Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman: The Secret Service, an adaptation of a graphic novel by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons.

The premise? Gary Unwin, a teenaged hooligan going nowhere in the London inner city, is drafted by his uncle (Colin Firth) into an elite super-spy agency's youth training program, where he joins a group of other young recruits to be trained as the next generation of James Bond-style secret agents.

Though he shows promise, the boy's background leads some to doubt he can truly rise above his station; but he gets a chance to prove himself when fate forces the rookie agents into conflict with a supervillain's evil scheme. The trailer keeps the plot beats to a minimum, instead focusing on the innate culture-clash of a 21st century street kid with the gear, gadgets and "gentleman spy" aesthetic straight out of 007.

The film is scheduled to open on October 24th.

So basically, this is a movie about a chav becoming a spy? Well, at-least from the trailer they seem to have their tongues firmly in cheek, maybe this won't be too bad.

I have somewhat of a hard time making the connection between this and Harry Potter.
"Boy goes to secret school" does not quite cut it for me...

I agree. It seems more Alex Rider to me.

I kind of like it! British films like this usually have a firm tongue in cheek attitude about it all. If the trailer is anything to go by it's a fun spy movie with a few pop culture things throw in it.

Harmless and possibly entertaining.

I wonder if Colin Firth is going to be a Michael Caine figure in his old age. I'd love that, anything Firth is in (or Michael Caine) is inherently better for their presence

It's seems more like an extreme version of Sandhurst than a 'magical boarding school':p

It'd probably be interesting, just as a way of proving whether the Alex Rider film could have been decent in the right hands.

And my image of a secret agent, with magical abilities is ultimately shattered when i actually read the thread and not the title...

I mean who wouldn't want to see a bunch of Magical, secret agents, riding on brooms, wielding pistols and other gadgets, but also having a wand, and some other magical artefacts to help not only the united kingdom, but also a magical universe that no one knows about but these agents?

HOLLYWOOD WHY!?

"The names Bond, mate. Chav Bond innit!"

I just don't think I'd enjoy watching this unless he gets hit in the face a lot. I'd rather watch a movie about one of the girls in that group of recuits but I guess this is supposed to be a movie about class rather than gender.

Funny if Caine is in this film as an establishment figure. He is the original working class spy. His Harry Palmer films were full of class bigotry because his character, like Caine himself was an East Londoner, the sixties equivalent of a chav.

Still maybe he is there in a reprisal of Harry Palmer. A working class spy who had the whole establishment against him and who never got anywhere career wise despite his obvious ability because he went to the wrong schools. He could serve as a warning to the new kid. I don't get that feeling though.

Anyway it gives off a strong Toy Soldiers, but with spies vibe to me.

So this is the attempt to make boys equivalent of a Hunger Games franchise. Still aimed, mostly, at the ladies with plenty of naked boys in desperate situations. Or actual gay men and youths, given the bulk of the struggles.

I... really like that as a concept. Definitely something I'll keep my eye out for.

When I read the title of the news post I though it was some sort of crossover... only moderately disappointed.

Still though, why not have an Avengers-style movie where a team of British guys join together?

At first I thought Daniel Radcliffe was going to be in this movie...

Other than that... I think I'm going to enjoy that movie when it comes out...

When someone is violent and irresponsible, you don't reward them with promises of more violence and expect them to be responsible about it.

When I saw the headline the first thing I thought of was The Secret Histories by Simon R Green, and i was a little disappointed when I saw it was not that, but nonetheless this looks good. Looking forward to seeing it.
