Official "GameCube" Controllers Coming For Smash Bros. Wii U

Nintendo has partnered with peripheral maker PDP to create a line of "GameCube inspired" Wii pro controllers, just in time for Smash Bros. Wii U.

If you ask any Smash Bros. player what their controller of choice is, the answer will always be the same. The GameCube controller. Nothing in the Nintendo arsenal of Wiimotes and nun-chucks and pro-controllers has come close to matching the feel of the original purple monstrosity, so you can imagine our sadness when we learned that it wouldn't be compatible with the Wii U, and thus, the upcoming Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

Luckily, Nintendo has just announced it is partnering with peripheral maker PDP to create a line of "GameCube inspired" controllers, that will plug into the bottom of your Wiimote like a standard Wii classic controller. The "Wired Fight Pad" should be in our hands just in time for the release of the new Smash Bros. GameCube fans rejoice!

The Wired Fight Pad, which will be an officially licensed Nintendo product, will feature fan-favorite Nintendo characters such as Mario, Yoshi, and Princess Peach with a shape inspired by the original Nintendo GameCube Controller. It's been given a RRP of $24.99 - not bad considering official GameCube controllers for the Wii go for around $50 these days.

The only thing I'm slightly annoyed at is now I have to go out and buy a whole new suite of controllers for my Wii U. I already have the pad, the remotes, the nunchucks, the pro controllers, and the classic controllers. Why didn't they just do this in the first place with the Wii classic controller?

Bah, Nintendo. Usually I'd be excited for this except I already bought this thing just for the game:
That's what I get for thinking ahead.

I also find it kinda strange that it plugs into a Wii Remote, I'd much rather have an all wireless controller. No denying that the GameCube had one of the best controllers around though.

Wow, the Wii U is almost in purchase worthy. I need at least 1 of 2 things in order for me to buy a Wii U. Either they release a new controller with a longer charge life, OR they release a port of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. Either one of those two and I'm really to buy my first Current-Gen console.

Awesome... So, can it also be bundled with the game? Or maybe it can also be part of the "pending" Smash Bros Wii U bundle?

You know what? It's doesn't matter because I'm buying two of them, anyway...

Whaaa? I have like four of those things and I don't even use them. Jeez, I really regret never developing my eBay account.

If it's as beautiful as it sounds I may get the controller and an adapter for my PC, then get angry at all the games that only accept Xbox controllers and nothing else.

I agree Steve, they should have just stayed with the Gamecube controllers, they are the best bloody controllers I have ever used. I consider it backwards not to use 'em.

Surprisingly, I've liked all Nintendo's moves recently. Can't wait to see how this new Smash turns out.

Edit: Scratch that last sentence, plugging in the Wii mote is really lame.

Smash tournament and Gamecube controllers? They just need to release a version with foxes only and Final Destination. The tournament players will probably stop complaining. Or maybe, they won't. I've seen people refuse to play the game if it's not melee or Project M.

The Gamecube controller remains my favourite, though having to plug it into a Wii mote will probably urge me to stick to the Wii U pro controller.

Fox is one of the top tier characters and Final Destination is one of the best stages for fair matches, so it's understandable when your putting money into it. However, as someone who watches the tournaments, they don't just use Fox and play only in Final Destination. It's unfortunate they didn't balance the game enough so that's why there are always popular characters.

I'm interested to know, what do they mean if it's not Melee?

I would approve if the controller would be N64 replica

This looks and sounds awesome. GC controllers were nice, I think the pad will work nicely too, so maybe just getting 3 of these when the pricec finally drops a little.
Althou just playing with the wiimotes makes it a bit more challenging :p

Super Smash Bros: Melee, the second Smash Bros for the Gamecube.

Also the best Smash Brothers, for reasons known only to Nintendo they removed most of the more technical moves from Brawl and slowed movement down slightly. It's not the same without air dodging and wave dashing damnit!

Honestly, I'd rather just use the Wii U gamepad if this controller relies on being plugged into a Wiimote, a detail many people seem to be overlooking. Why can't it plug into the Wii U with a USB connection? The fact that it's wired doesn't diminish its reliance on the Wiimote's battery, does it (full disclosure, I never used the Classic Controller or anything)?

I actually have grown quite fond of the normal Wii U gamepad. Aside from the structuring making the normal L and R buttons a bit convoluted to use, the thing is quite comfortable to use and is a remarkable piece of technology. I don't like it quite as much as the PS4 controller based on the few times I've used that, but it's certainly no worse than the PS3 controller in my mind, which has been my mainstay gamepad for the last four years.

What reason is there, at this point, for you to own more than one Pro Controller?

I mean, I was considering maybe picking up a few more for MK8, although since I'm usually just fine with Remotes + Wheels there and I now know (just in time!) that this is coming out later I think I'll hold off.

I'm with everyone else on this - Why attach it to a Wii remote when you can just make a few adjustments to the GC controller to accommodate a Wii battery and Bluetooth sensor? I'd rather deal with a controller that's about as heavy as the Wavebird rather than have a Wii remote freely swinging around on a wire...

Now, how about making the WiiU able to play the GameCube games I love?

Honestly, though, I love my pro controller, and I think this attachment's more for milking nostalgia than anything else. Or maybe a good inexpensive alternative, now that I think about it.

Seriously though, Nintendo. GameCube backwards compatibility. Get on that. Please?
