Man Builds Life-Sized Robocop ED-209

You have twenty seconds to check out this awesome movie-quality replica.

Remember the ED-209 from the opening of Robocop? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9l9wxGFl4k] Shawn Thorsson, master props builder and costume maker, certainly does, dedicating three months of his life to building a life-sized movie-quality replica of the gigantic bipedal robot. While originally intended to simply be a static replica, Thorsson actually decided to put some actuators in the joints so that it could swivel and move its elbows just enough to scare the pants off of anyone who's ever seen the movie.

Enjoy it in its full glory below:

If you're interested in seeing how this behemoth was put together, be sure to check out Thorsson's making of [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBY8bC_yoWA] movie, which he produced for the Bay Area Maker Faire.

"There are only a few projects that have made it onto my bucket list and I'm glad to say that this one is finished. It's been three very demanding months, but the final product makes up for it," said Thorsson on his blog [http://protagonist4hire.blogspot.com.au/2014/05/lifesize-ed-209-build-part-7-it-is-done.html]. "I couldn't be more proud."

Well, this is pretty awesome. It would probably be fun to make people think it's a static replica, then turn it on when they get near.

Yes! Why has the world taken so long to do this!?
Well technically they did it when Robocop came out, even though it was animated with stop-motion. Practical effects are awesome like that.

I especially like this photo.

My money is on R2, mostly because he can handle stairways better than old ED. ;P

ED-209.
Looks badass.
Is pretty pathetic when put into action.
Stairs? Falls down them and squeals.
Anti-tank rifle? Blown to smithereens.
9 year old little girl? Hack it in about 10 seconds.

Poor ED. Ya kinda feel sorry for the big guy.

Though this is pretty damn cool. I especially like him facing off to R2-D2. Now, if someone does a prank video of people walking up to it, thinking it a statue only to have it turn and face them. Bonus if they can make it say, "Drop your weapon. You have 30 seconds to comply."

The sad part is, I could probably model a decent looking one that walks in less than a month in maya and animate it doing whatever. It's good that guys like him are keeping the spirit of props alive and awesome

They had a full sized one too for shots where it's more or less standing there, or for when people have to interact directly with it: http://robocoparchive.com/info/making1-ed209.htm

Would love to know what happened to it after filming wrapped. Unfortunately that kind of stuff would get binned half the time.

Whatever the shortcomings of the new Robocop movie their depiction of ED-209 made much more sense, basically an semi autonomous heavy support unit for infantry rather than something you would send off on its own. It carried the firepower of an IFV but could easily navigate an urban environment and would use its heavy firepower to attack anything engaging the infantry, they in turn protected it in extremely close quarters.
