Jeopardy! Host Alex Trebek Gets Guinness World Record for Hosting

Alex Trebek has now hosted over 6,000 episodes of Jeopardy!, which has earned him a Guinness World Record.

In news that make me feel older than I should be, Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek has been awarded the Guinness World Record for "most game show episodes hosted by the same presenter," as of this Friday. To date, Trebek has hosted 6,892 episodes of the popular trivia show since he started hosting it in 1984. Trebek states in the video embedded that "This is special in the fact that I've been around for a long time, and I've had the good fortune to be associated with a good program like Jeopardy!."

In the video, we see Trebek in his younger days hosting the show for a bit, before present-day Trebek appears on camera to speak out on his latest achievement. "It's a quality program that I never have to apologize for when I meet people, so there are no downsides to this," Trebek notes. Regarding the award, Trebek mentions that it will go up in the stairway leading to his bedroom, which means it will be visible to him everyday.

Fortunately for those who watch the show, Trebek has mentioned that he'll stick to his hosting job as long as he's able to saying [http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/q-a-alex-trebek-jeopardys-703947] , "I told audiences and interviewers in the past that I will stick with it as long as I'm having a good time and as long as I feel my skills haven't diminished too much."

I admit, I haven't been watching Jeopardy! as much as I used to, but I do appreciate what the show brings to the table. In any case, a hearty congrats are in order to Trebek, and may he befuddle more viewers in the coming years.

Without the mustache I don't believe its the real Trebek but a robot they replaced him with when the original died or retired to obscurity.
"I'll take the rapists for 400" - Sean Connery (parody)
"No Sean, that's Therapists" - Trebek (parody)

Don't get what I mean? The Saturday Night Live skits with Darrell Hammond as Sean Connery and Will Farrell as Alex Trebek were probably some of the funniest shit I've ever seen.

Man, that skit is 16 years old...

... and still hilarious.

I much rather prefer the sleazier Connery, though.

You didn't say who was the previous record holder. I'm guessing it was Bob Barker, who certainly still holds the record for number of years hosting the same show (35), unless he went on a multi-season-long break I'm not familiar with.

Amazing that its been that long, and how it still holds up. Incidentally Darrell Hammond is a family friend (my mom's best friend in high school is or was married to him, not sure about that) and I got to go backstage on SNL in 1999. That was really cool and Darrell is an awesome guy off camera. Also Will Farrell doesn't change off camera, he's just as whacko IRL. All in all it was a cool experience.

This kinda' surprises me. The Price is Right was on every weekday, probably as often as Jeopardy. If Bob's been at it longer, how'd Alex get more episodes in?

Is it just me or does Alex Trebek look uncannily like an older version of Bryan Cranston?

I know it's kinda a random observation, but now I can't unsee it.

Hard to say, really. I did crunch the numbers and it's close, at least in comparison to large numbers. According to my estimate, not counting reruns, Bob Barker is just short of 6,700 episodes.

However, remember that this is just an estimate and I could be off.

Nothing against Trebek. Just wondering how a man of more years gets out-episoded when they both ran daily.

Sorry, can't hear what you're saying. *sticks fingers in ears and starts humming 'Stars and Stripes Forever' rather loudly*

Ah fooey, can't watch this in my country.

More on topic, good for him, even if I'm still not quite used to him being mustache-less.

Maybe Bob had all the episodes where fur coats were offered as prizes erased from the archives, so they only counted the rest. ;)

On another though, I wonder if they counted each 'episode' that was played in the game. [footnote]The joke being, almost no one has played this game.[/footnote]
