Splatoon Splashing Onto Wii U First Half of 2015 With 1v1 Mode

The producer for the project suggests that the newly announced mode could feature a lot more hiding and stalking than the 4v4 battle royales.

Splatoon made a big impression at E3 last week. An online shooter for the Wii U, revolving around splattering as much paint as possible across an arena? It was new ground for Nintendo, and one of several announcements that reinvigorated interest in their struggling console. It even scored one of our <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/conferences/e32014/11748-The-Un-Official-Escapist-E3-Awards.2>very officially un-official E3 Awards for "Best Premise for A Game Ever."

Now, website Game Rant reports that Wii U owners can expect the new game within the first half of 2015, along with a one-on-one and single player mode. In a recent interview, Splatoon producer and manager Hisashi Nogami said the following:

"First of all, our plan is to release this as a full retail packaged software in 2015... the first half of 2015. And because we're releasing this as a full software title, we of course plan to include a single-player mode but then also a one-on-one multiplayer mode that can be played without connecting to the Internet."

While no other details were available on the single player mode, the one-on-one mode will feature local play, with one player on the Wii U GamePad and another using a Wii U Pro Controller. Nogami's team is thinking about having that mode play very differently from the four-on-four battles showcased at E3, perhaps forcing the two players into more of a game of cat-and-mouse. In the interview, which also featured Splatoon project lead Tsubasa Sakaguchi, it was suggested the one-on-one battles could feature "a lot more stalking and hiding in the ink. It'll be much more like a quiet mode in a sense." Of course, none of these plans are final until the game actually ships.

Well that'll be interesting. Don't see many FPS games nowadays with dedicated 1v1 options. Normally you have to set a private match to do that.
For me, I've never been interested in 1v1 matches, as I've been more of a Big Team/Free-For-All person when it comes to the few multiplayer FPS games I play.
Still, I'm sure there will be people who are happy about this.

It's good to hear that they're working on a single player mode for this. Hopefully it's not a bizarro world situation of it being single player slapped on a multiplayer title for the sake of it.

hm...wonder what single-player would be like in Splatoon...more importantly, when are they going to announce Delphino Island as one of the arenas? 1v1 sounds like it could be interesting too but I'd have to see it in action before really forming an opinion. It's the only real couch co-op console, the U but, I never really use co-op features multiplayer games I already own.

It's also nice to hear it'll be out sooner rather than later! I doubt we'll see this in January or February but if it is a February release I can add it to my birthday list!

You think there could be a game mode where Mario's desperately running around trying to clean up every other team's messes? A little asymmetrical gameplay?

OT: I'm wondering if there will even be a "story" mode, so to speak, and if it will play out like De Blob (full of excuses to paint the town red, or blue, or yellow). Well, as long as they focus on the core of the gameplay, it'll be consistent.

Whether or not Mario is a part of Splatoon, does anybody else get the feeling that the earliest of prototypes of this was the very-same Mario, paint-ball themed FPS most of us are guilty of joking about?

How is that bizarro world? That happens all the time with stuff like Battlefield and Call of Duty

As cool as Splatoon looked, I had absolutely no intention of buying the game until I was informed of it having a single player mode. Now that it has a single player mode, I'm sold, hopefully I'll have the funds to afford it when it comes out and I look forward to enjoying it.

I was thinking of the opposite of what happens to games like Dead Space or the Tomb Raider reboot, but yeah, your right. It happens enough both ways.

I am already sold on this game, the only thing they could add at this point is character customization.

This seems like the kind of game that would have it. I wouldn't be surprised to see character customization.

OT: Well this is good news. I'm even more excited about this now than I was before. I wonder what the single player is gonna be like though? Will it be more like a traditional single player mode with it's own maps, story, and objective. Or will it be more like Titanfall, except with AI players instead of humans.
