FRIDAY BOX-OFFICE: Transformers Dominates, Others Stumble

Michael Bay's fourth robot adventure could have a $100 million weekend

Surprising nobody, Transformers: Age of Extinction is opening to huge Friday box-office which, if consistent, could make it the first film to exceed the opening weekend haul of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and may push all the way to the $100 million "magic number."

Transformers has opened largely unopposed, with the only other recent action competition being the underperforming Edge of Tomorrow. It's also performing strong overseas, particularly in China - which should leave the Chinese investors who partnered with Paramount on the production feeling pretty good about their decision.

The film faces little real competition heading into its second weekend (July 4th, no less), as well. The only competitors in sight are the family flick Earth to Echo, Deliver Us From Evil (a horror film from soon-to-be Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson) and the Melissa McCarthy comedy Tammy.

Argh.

Well, I guess that's not super surprising since no other new movie came out this weekend.
I started to catch a matinee show myself, then I slapped myself in the face and decided to buy some ice cream instead.

Not surprising but it is annoying. Really annoying, and the fact everyone seems to love these crappy filsm so much, they dont make any sense and take a big fat dump all over transformers. ffs the 1986 film still pisses all over all 4 bays movies.

Optimus Prime died for your sins.

OT:I totally expected the movie to make assloads of money as much as I hate the bay films which are a insult to the franchise.

Apparently this film has a nasty habit of constantly changing aspect ratio and switching from 3D to non-3D shots? I wonder how that affects the viewing...

"Prime you cant die"...... aaahhh when he fades to black still gets me all choked up and goosbumpy. And yet when prime died in bays much like the rest of the bayformers.......did not give a shit.

G1 has waaaayyyyyyy more problems than the Bayverse. Sure it's expected from an 80's tv show, but despite having some pretty good episodes, (LOVE The Rebirth) even by 80's standards the animation was pretty much awful.

Don't get me wrong, the films are barely above average, but i pay money to see gigantic robots who transform into cars, helicopters, jets, tanks and other vehicles fight each other and blowing shit up (Which they did even in G1, hell the first G1 ep opens with an explosion!) and that's exactly what i get.

Full disclosure, I'm partly to blame. I saw this because a friend who I didn't know was somehow a fan of these movies persuaded me it'd be alright. I could have seen Jump Street or Edge of Tomorrow or something but I saw this. It wasn't a waste of money, but it doesn't deserve to dominate the box office.

Ok, everybody. We HAVE to fix this.

"Edge of Tomorrow" is bloody brilliant. I don't know a single person in real life who's seen it and doesn't love it (which means that all three of us loved it. Yeah, three. And that's why this thing is getting beat at the box office.)

It is smart, hella fun, action-packed (and good, well-edited, largely shakycam-free action at that), with great characters, a great script, and WAY better than the rather lacklustre marketing would suggest. PLEASE go see this movie. And don't be a douchebag and pirate it either. If any movie deserves to be seen on the big screen, it's this one. Seriously, I've seen "Her" and "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and this is, quality-wise, on a par with them. Except it's a big-budget action movie starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. And it's awesome.

Go see "Edge of Tomorrow". Sound advice from some random guy on the Internet. And we all know random guys on the Internet are never wrong.

I'd suggest waiting for on demand for edge of tomorrow. It's not horrible, but it's not something you really need to see in the movies either. I won't be seeing (And have watched) any of the transformers movies. Me and my wife did not finish Pacific Rim even though it was free on HBO or one of those channels. So robot movies are not really our thing......I did really like "Groundhogs day" though, and edge of tomorrow kinda goes along that theme...in a more violent way.

Worth watching. I'd watch it twice before a transformer move....but I'd still say hold off and wait for DVD or on Demand personally....it wasn't good enough to need to be seen right away in the movies.

It's a shame that a well made movie like Edge of Tomorrow is struggling, while a sequel to some of the worst summer blockbusters, ever made, is doing so well. It's going to sound snobbish, but i wished people had higher standards, i know it's just mindless popcorn movies, but why watch complete shit if we can demand good mindless popcorn movies?

This is why we can't have nice things.

Michael Bay had his three swings at bat and never even made a base-run in bringing Transformers to the big screen with any semblance of care, respect, or talent...

And here we are with a fourth movie opening big while Edge of Tomorrow and How To Train Your Dragon 2 struggle at the box office.

Humanity, you disappoint me.

Wait... What do you mean that seeing Edge of Tomorrow and How To Train Your Dragon 2 basically back-to-back didn't do anything to stop the "Transformers Dominance" this weekend?

Damn you marketing and your use of the "Dinobots" as a major selling point! (I feel sorry for the popcorn at this point...)

This is why I can love transformers so much
No pretentious hype, we all know it's going to just be stupid fun
The hype surrounding edge of tomorrow and the original httyd just kills them for me
The fastest way to alienate me from something is never hearing negative opinions about it
