Breaking Bad Spin-Off's "Flexible" Timeline Will Allow For Easier Cameos

AMC's Better Call Saul might be able to use it's back and forth timeline to integrate cameos from the cast of Breaking Bad.

Some minor spoilers ahead!

Breaking Bad came to an end last year with a final season full of devastating discoveries, tragedy and, of course, a ton of meth. Even with the saga of Walter White finished however, it's recently been revealed that fans might see more of the suburban drug lord and his cohorts in AMC's <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/127726-Breaking-Bad-Spinoff-Series-Greenlit-by-AMC>in-the-works spin-off Better Call Saul.

Speaking about the show in <a href=http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/tv/breaking-bad-spinoff-bring-back-walter-white-article-1.1847159>a recent interview, co-creator Peter Gould confirmed that the show will employ a shifting timeline that could make it easy to more naturally incorporate characters like Breaking Bad protagonist Walter White. "One of the great things about having a time line which is flexible is that perhaps some of it takes place before Breaking Bad, during Breaking Bad, and after Breaking Bad. That gives us the ability to bring back characters that were killed on Breaking Bad, "

None of this, of course, is to suggest that Gould and fellow co-creator Vince Gilligan intend to let Better Call Saul simply ride Breaking Bad's coattails to success. "We want to make a show that stands on it own, is its own story and is a brand extension," said Gould. "We think we have a story that is worth making. ... We could never dream of the kind of success that Breaking Bad had and the love we got from the fans. But (with 'Saul') at a certain point you have to do the best job you can and tell the best story that entertains you, get a good response and hope people like it."

Better Call Saul is currently set to premiere in <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/135568-Breaking-Bad-Spinoff-Better-Call-Saul-Delayed-Gets-Second-Season>early 2015 and, according to Gould, AMC has already confirmed it for a second season.

This actually makes me less enthusiastic about the show. I want Better Call Saul to be its own thing, not just constantly saying 'Hey, remember how great Breaking Bad was'. The only BB characters I want in BCS are Saul, Mike, Huell, Kuby and Francesca. And maybe Gus. But that's it.

I still don't see this ever being good. It will always be in BB's shadow, and I think it will show when it airs and noone feels satisfied because, even with all the hype and reassurance that it really won't be, they will all want it to be BB.

You can bet Skinny Pete and gang will make some kind of appearance, which is fine by me. I don't know why the show would even want to have scenes set during Breaking Bad's timeline, it seems like it would only diverge from whatever new storyline(s) the show is going to have, not to mention drawing more comparison to a show that, let's face it, BCS is probably not going to live up to.

It seems like most people feel this way though. I don't know of anyone who thinks BCS is going to be the next Breaking Bad, or even many people who think it'll be good at all. Perhaps the pessimism around it will keep expectations low. And who knows, the show could be good, it's supposed to have a lot of the same creative people as BB. The question is whether they can do comedy as well as they did drama.

Am I the only one wondering what it means by a back and forth timeline?

When I think of something like that, I think of 'How I met your mother' and how it constantly had flash-backs, and even flash-forwards.

You have to be careful with that back and forth time stuff. They wrote themselves into an inescapable corner in How I Met Your Mother and I thought the ending was terrible.

I guess this can be good and bad at time same time, just have to see how they pull it off.
