Guardians of the Galaxy Art Showcases Grizzled Rocket and Monstrous Groot

Concept artist Justin Sweet has released concept art from Guardians of the Galaxy showing off early versions of Rocket, Groot, Gamora and more.

<a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escape-to-the-movies/9615-Guardians-of-the-Galaxy-Surprise-This-Movie-Rocks>Guardians of the Galaxy has been a huge hit for <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/marvel>Marvel and Disney, <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/136591-Friday-Box-Office-Guardians-of-The-Galaxy-Is-a-Record-Breaking-Smash>breaking records and demonstrating to moviegoers everywhere that there's no subject or character to ridiculous for an audience to fall in love with. Case in point, the film's clear fan favorites have been Groot and Rocket Raccoon; a walking tree and a talking Raccoon. As silly as they are in concept however, they won viewers over with their persistenty hilarious humor.

That in mind, it's interesting to see how the characters and the film overall were initially envisioned. Concept artist Justin Sweet, for instance, recently released a series of concept art images he created for <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/guardians%20of%20the%20galaxy>Guardians of the Galaxy. While some of the images portray the characters relatively as they were seen in the film, others like Rocket and Groot are notably less adorable and more grim looking than the their final versions. Rocket in particular looks older, bulkier and not even remotely like something I can picture Bradley Cooper's voice coming out of. Groot, likewise, looks more than a tad scarier than he wound up being, though the differences there are arguably less extreme than with Rocket.

I personally also found Sweet's various takes on Gamora to be interesting and liked how many of them portrayed her to be a bit more on the muscular side. Zoe Saldana was great, of course, but it might have neat to see a Gamora more closely modeled after Sweet's take. All in all, Sweet's art serves as interesting look into the development of Guardians and you'd definitely do well to give it a gander if you enjoyed the film.

Still wish they'd made Zoe's eyes pupiless like Gamora has always been drawn with but I guess kids would then think she looks too creepy and they do wanna sell toys of these characters after all.

Groot also I would have preferred a little scarier looking but oh well.

This Nova armor look BADASS

I cannot for the life of me, understand why they ditched it. They could keep at least the helmet designs. I mean, look at it, it's just awesome!

agreed, it needs some tweeks here and there found in the final design but It looks great.

very alien but very threatening but I think it's because they wanted it to look more militaristic than warrior armour like.

Is just that I can't shake this feeling I got from the very first trailer and even after seeing the movie, that the nova corps look too plain. Most likely I wouldn't notice it if I didn't like Nova in the first place or if the rest of the movie wasn't so damn beautiful.
I mean, something just feels a bit off about their uniforms. Maybe it's just me. Maybe it's just the actor they showed in the main scenes. I can't tell for sure.

Yeah I glad they didn't went with the bulky looks for Rocket and Groot. While Groot look like this comicbook counterpart, I did thought Rocket look abit too skinny but none the less when I actually seen him in action, he did look exactly a biped Racoon which means perfect!

It's like they've had all life and personality sucked out. And I don't mean like "Ooh they've been made depressing", it's like I'm looking at blank pictures.

And though it's not stupid gritty art, I'd still call it bad because anything that sucks the life and personality and humor out of the guardians is just not worth looking at to me.

Wow, I love the Nova Corps concept, looks a lot cooler than the ones in the Movie, although maybe they tried to dull down the regular members of the Corp so that if they cast an actual "Nova" they will stand out more.

Can't say I dig the rest of the concepts that much.
