Watch the Iceland Volcano Erupt, Live!

UPDATE:The eruption of Iceland's Bardarbunga is happening right now and you can watch it on livestream right here [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKtGqoxV_qo].

Part of the area is off-limits, according to a tweet by Gisli Olafsson, an emergency response director in Iceland. "Until scientists downgrade danger of eruption... area north of Bárðarbunga will be closed to cars and hikers," he writes.

UPDATE: The threat level has been lowered to orange, the second-highest level. Restrictions to air travel have been canceled. Seismic activity continues at the volcano, but an eruption is no longer believed to be imminent.

Iceland has evacuated hundreds of people and issued a red alert for air travel after the Bardarbunga volcano showed indications of a potential upcoming eruption.

The Bardarbunga [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B%C3%A1r%C3%B0arbunga] volcano located under Iceland's most extensive glacier, Vatnajokull, is undergoing seismic activity. A small eruption has taken place 30 km (~19 miles) away, under the Dyngjujokull ice cap.

Iceland has issued a red alert, the highest warning possible, and airspace over the region has been closed. A Europe-wide alert has also been issued. Still, all Icelandic airports are remaining open for the time being.

The earthquake [http://en.vedur.is/] activity continued.

On Wednesday, geologists reported that roughly 300 earthquakes had been detected in the area since midnight on Tuesday, prompting authorities to evacuate several hundred people from the region in case of an eruption.

In April 2010, Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/100132-Icelandic-Volcano-Causes-Videogame-Delays], causing the largest closure of European airspace since the Second World War.

In 1996, an eruption [http://rses.anu.edu.au/~hrvoje/Bardarbunga.html] in the area was believed to have been started by a strong earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter scale.

Isn't this a little out of date? Because today they already lowered it back to code orange. [http://edition.cnn.com/2014/08/23/world/europe/iceland-volcano/index.html?hpt=hp_t3]

Bit of an update, there was no eruption yesterday. It was anomalus earthquake behaviour.
There is still a lot of activity in a large magma passage but it has no erupted. It might do however.
The icelandic meteorologic office has very comprehensive coverage so if anyone is interested in this, go to http://en.vedur.is/#tab=skjalftar. The warning level has also been lowered to orange.

Darn it, the one volcano in Iceland that I could remeber/pronounce!
Its a mountain that went BAR DAR BUNGA!
Now the magma is going to build up and explode under a mountain with waaay too many vowels.

Hahah, great reference and good point. When I first read "red alert," I thought that was media sensationalism, for sure. When I found out it's the actual term they use, I... didn't know how to take it. "That sounds pretty bad... but how bad?"

The Bardarbunga volcano
Well, at least it's easier to pronounce than Eyjafjallajökull.

located under Iceland's most extensive glacier, Vattnajokull,
Hang on Iceland, don't do us like that. . .

is undergoing seismic activity. A small eruption has taken place 30 km (~19 miles) away, under the Dyngjujokull ice cap.
Oh COME ON.

Hey everyone, your friendly neighborhood viggih7 reporting in from Iceland.

Right now the weather is a bit crap (but then again, it always is) and most people are not in fact worried about the volcano (that stuff's about as worrying as your car breaking down). What we are worried about is all that bad press we get when airports get shut down like it's our fault.

But worry not, everyone here is keeping calm and so should you.

p.s. Mr. Miozzi, you wrote Vatnajokull wrong. There is only one "t".

Interesting, earthquakes in California, seismic activity in Iceland.... its almost as if there's a planet somewhere around here having normal geological activity. Of course someone may attribute that to human interaction with said planet, others may hail it as the end times (especially since apparently Jesus has claimed to be back).

From what I've read/seen so far, this whole situation has been handled very professionally and efficiently. Unless I have missed something major, the Icelandic officials who coordinated this deserve praise for their efforts and results.

That webcam is really putting me on edge, as I'm going to be flying in a couple days.

At least it doesn't look remotely world-ending.

At start it was rather boring, but now it's bubbling up spewing lava at least 20-30yards wide. So it is getting better in time. Maybe hoping for world-ending is a bad thing, but...na, I want it!

Well, it's gone flat now.

Anyone up for round two?
