Xena Gets Intimidating Disney Princess Makeover From Artist

Artist NIA's character designs give Xena and Gabrielle the animated Disney look.

We've seen Disney Princesses recast as Avatar: The Last Airbender characters [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/136960-Disney-Princesses-Twisted-by-Artist-Into-Terrors], but artist NIA has brought a Warrior Princess into the Disney pantheon. A Xena: Warrior Princess fan, NIA has redesigned Xena and Gabrielle into animated Disney style. NIA's Xena looks ready to take on the Greek gods and belt out powerful songs, with Gabrielle at her side.

NIA writes about the inspiration for her redesigns on her Tumblr [http://nayyonaise.tumblr.com/]. "Animation isn't really my strong suit, but I've been thinking about something like this for quite a while," says NIA. "[The style is] taken mostly from Disney's Hercules (what else would be more appropriate) with some elements from the wonderful horror that is Hercules and Xena - The Animated Movie: The Battle for Mount Olympus."

The Escapist spoke with NIA about her love for Xena: Warrior Princess. "She was one of my first strong female role models growing up," says NIA. "Her show was considered too 'adult' for me to watch, but when no one was around I'd flip on over to whatever channel she was on just to see tall, dark and gorgeous kick ass onscreen." NIA believes now is a great time to bring the characters back. She says, "Although at the time I didn't understand the significance of her character in popular culture, my recent interest in reviving her is simply because right now we just don't have those well rounded leading female characters that were so prominent in the '90s. We need more Xenas & Gabrielles, Buffys, and Dana Scullys on the big and small screens for little girls to admire."

Xena: Warrior Princess aired in syndication from 1995 until 2001. Comic books, novel adaptations, and video games based on the series have been published since its end, but fans have hoped since the series' finale for a live-action revival. Lucy Lawless, who plays Xena, revealed on Twitter in 2013 that a fan campaign was sparking some discussions.

The "red tape" comes from ownership over the rights to Xena: Warrior Princess. Lawless told Huffington Post [http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/09/lucy-lawless-spartacus-vengeance_n_1263340.html] in 2012 that a development of a Xena movie was troubled by a "glitch in the paperwork in ownership." Whether the series is revived or not, fans will likely continue to clamor to see the cast brought back together again in some format.

You can see more of NIA's work on accepts commissions [http://nayyonaise.tumblr.com/] for artwork. Personally, I think NIA's designs beat the armor off the art in Hercules and Xena - The Animated Movie: The Battle for Mount Olympus. I'd love to see her take on Callisto, Joxer, and Autolycus!

This is awesome! I would like the idea of a Xena spinoff. Sure, it would be coming years later, but it would be cool to see (though no Kevin Smith [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Smith_(New_Zealand_actor)] to be Ares again). Perhaps a male/female protagonist combo of some sort.

Isnt she a bit dark though? Unless she was originally like that but I dont remember.

I do like the Hercules art style and while I usually dont like these "somebody has drawn something Disney related" posts I guess this one does have some "news" part attached to it

The first 2 don't look very Disney Princess-y, they look more DC comics-y, but the second 2 do through.

I actually think this looks pretty good... though I wonder why she's so darn tanned...

It'd be awesome to see Xena airing again! Always kinda had a crush on Lucy Lawless.

But seriously, she was a great character, IMO. She could be again, and I think we need that.

Honestly those two look like they fitted pefectly into Disney Hercules! The shape of the head and the eyes remind me alot of Hercules artstyle.

Gief. Gief new Xena series. -grabbyhands-

Just make sure to keep the lesbian (or bisexual, I suppose) overtones that eventually become more than overtones. Kinda.

I'm pretty sure Lucy Lawless is white. Xena and Gabrielle should have the same skin tone.

I was thinking the same thing too, they all look great but the last two look like they were production pics for a upcoming movie.

I wouldn't mind seeing someone take a crack at making the princess' look like they belong to the 40K and Fantasy verses, maybe I just have too much free time on my hand to think of such things.

Man, the biceps and quads in the 2nd image. If only less women were afraid of looking like that.

Reminds me of the Sphynx from Subnormality [http://www.viruscomix.com/page432.html]. Something about the hair and eyes.
