Princess Peach and Her Turnips Cause Super Smash Bros. Bans

A bug in online play causes bans for Super Smash Bros. 3DS players using Princess Peach in "For Glory" mode.

Nintendo confirmed today a bug has been causing temporary bans from online play in Super Smash Bros. 3DS. Nintendo states it will have a fix in about a week.

The temporary bans happen when a player uses Peach's ability to pull turnips in the "For Glory" online mode, competitive online play on the Final Destination stage with no items. When Peach pulls a turnip, the game issues a one-day ban.

However, the ban does not always occur. much more likely to get banned when pulling out a turnip at the very beginning of a match. [http://www.eventhubs.com/news/2014/sep/14/video-super-smash-bros-3ds-peach-bug-replicated-stream-learn-how-avoid-getting-hit-ban/]

Other characters, such as Link, have moves where they pull out items. It's possible the bug only affects Peach's turnips because the item is available in the Customize mode. Super Smash Bros. 3DS is out in Japan, and a demo version is available for select Club Nintendo Platinum members [http://www.polygon.com/2014/9/12/6140917/super-smash-bros-demo-hits-today-for-some-next-week-for-all]. The demo will be publicly available September 19, but players can only launch the demo up to 30 times. The game will launch in full in North America and Europe on October 3. Super Smash Bros. 4 will also be available on the Wii U this holiday season.

I never understood the x amount of times you can launch the demo. At least not in the other games where the games are only parts of the full game. Is the SSB demo any different? A limited amount of how many times you can launch it would make sense if they give you the full game and limit you to few times, but giving you a demo with few features and still limiting it to few launches... Oh well.

More on topic, probably good that they made the early demo only limited to fewer people. They can fix most bugs found before releasing the demo to a wider audience which would probably allow them to fix even more bugs if they are found before launching the game.

It's a good thing they found this out now so it didn't turn up out of the blue on release day. Yep... I went there.

The only good thing about Japan getting games first: they get to find all the bugs that get fixed in our day-one patches XD

Anyway, I wish they wouldn't release the demo before they released the full version. I try to avoid demos of games I've already pre-ordered so that I won't have to go through the tedious process of playing through every stage that was in the demo one more time to get to the new stuff.

Shame on Nintendo for letting this one get through. If you are going to have anti cheating measures in place they need to be thoroughly tested.

But all in all Nintendo QA seems pretty decent.

You can play the smash bros demo as many times as you want. Though with only five characters and one map, you can only do so much.

I saw the article and thought that the game itself had been banned, so I was expecting some sort of ridiculous Australian anti-turnip regulation.

Judging from the article, it looks like the publicly available demo will have a 30 launch limit, but I have the Club Nintendo Platinum demo and it has no launch limit. Also, the demo features the characters Mario, Link, Pikachu, Villager, and Mega Man, and you can play on two forms of Battlefield, one normal version of the stage with items on, and an Omega version, in which the stage has no platforms and no items.

Sure the full version will only consist of 1 character, 1 map, and no items:

...access to five characters seems almost excessive for a demo of SBB

Samus looks hungry in the picture and Peach made her a snack.

Also seeing the picture made me think the game was banned for the eyes or something, like somebody was offended by it.

Platinum members(only a select few, which begs the question of "why be a platinum member at all?" Should've been given to all plat members.) get unlimited uses while those that Nintendo decided to ignore get the filthy limited uses demo.

Also, did Wart code this bug in?

It wasn't just a select few. All platinum members that had a valid email address on file and email notifications enabled got it. A few sites (Polygon) misreported this, and several other sites sourced these sites, and got everyone all confused.

P.S. Thanks

I have a valid email. I asked for emails from Nintendo. I'm a Platinum member. I never got an email. I called Ninty today about it. They said I fit the requirements. Yet there were no more codes to give out.

Did you enable notifications after they started giving codes out? The most common reason people didn't get it is that they enabled email notifications after Nintendo had already checked which accounts met the requirements.

Other than that, I don't know. The way their press email and FAQ both phrased it, it should've gone to everyone. It's possible they simply didn't allocate enough codes and had to stop near the end, but it'd be the first I've heard of it.

P.S. Thanks

I imagine most people wouldn't be too peachy about running into this bug after buying the game day one.

It's always been enabled. I've been a Platinum member for the past three years. Got all the stuff from it. It just reminds me of those beta codes that are given out yet I've never gotton one.

That would only happen if the turnip was being shoved somewhere it didn't belong >.>

Glad the bug was caught before release, imagine the outrage if people were being banned on mass.
