Canadian Politician Endorses Life-Sized Wolverine Statue

Edmonton City Councillor Andrew Knack thinks a tribute statue to Wolverine, Canada's famous fictional mutant, would be a great idea.

Publicly displaying statues of fictional characters is nothing new. <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/97060-Japans-Life-Sized-Gundam-to-Make-a-Return>That's why Japan ended up with a full-scale Gundam statue, after all. But it's still pretty rare to see politicians show their geek credentials by supporting such projects. Apparently that's not the case in Edmonton, Alberta, where City Councillor Andrew Knack has thrown in his personal support for a life-sized statue of Marvel Comics' Wolverine.

This project currently exists in the form of a <a href=http://www.change.org/p/city-council-mayor-don-iveson-erect-a-life-size-wolverine-statue-in-city-hall>Change.org petition, requesting the construction of a Wolverine statue in Alberta. To be fair, the logic is somewhat sound. Marvel has made no secret of the fact that Wolverine is Canadian, while <a href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Origin_%28comics%29>the Origin mini-series revealed he was born in 19th Century Alberta. For that reason, Jason Seitz is petitioning for a statue that could be located in Edmonton's City Hall, Churchill Square, or Alberta Legislature Grounds.

That's where Knack comes in, who noted that a Wolverine statue could be a great thing if handled properly. "The first reaction is, this is kind of funny," Knack said. "But then you realize they're taking this very seriously. I think it's a great idea, assuming we go about it the right approach, can't be taxpayer dollars to fund a statue of Wolverine."

The Change.org petition is still well short of the 100,000 supporters needed to reach its goal, but the internet being what it is, that's not insurmountable. Whether the statue actually becomes a reality remains to be seen. The timing certainly works; now that <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/comicsandcosplay/12205-Check-Out-Death-of-Wolverine-The-Names-God-Hates-Astronauts-and-.4>Wolverine is about to die in the Marvel comics world, this could be an impressive memorial.

I doubt it'll be that impressive if it really is Life-Sized. Isn't Wolverine 5 foot 2 inches or something?

Picturing him as short as my girlfriend is just... unsettling XD

Hugh Jackman will be immortalized! XD

Kickstart it. Might as well, since the local government isn't going to spend anything on this. A tentative yes was enough to get the Robocop statue made in Detroit. This is as good as they'll get to a "sure go ahead."

Incredibly idiotic. I'll cringe every time I have to walk by city hall if they actually go forward with something like this.

I can't see it going anywhere but Churchill Square since it's where most of the public art is already. I also don't see why celebrating art is "incredibly idiotic" even if nobody local had anything to do with creating it. Edmonton is holding its own Comic and Entertainment Expo this upcoming weekend so its not like Edmonton is the wrong place for a comic statue. There's also quite the push for Edmonton's growing art scene to become one of the city's tourist attractions. It's more like the opposite of "incredibly idiotic" when you start thinking about it for more than half a second.

For some reason I instantly thought of the episode of Family Guy where Mayor West spends all the town's money on a solid gold Dig 'Em statue.

Not sure I like this. Although the character is of Canadian nationality, the character itself isn't a Canadian creation. Superman would more appropriate, at least Superman's original artist and co-creator was Canadian.

Ya we had those heritige moments about it.

I'm going in the no camp with the wolverine statue, there are definatley more canadian and even more albertan things out there. Why not eddington from DS9 as the authour randomly want to make him canadian too. Or edmonton can ask themselves does wolverine, made by an american working for an american company, exemplify traits that the edmontonian or the albertan can relate to?

This is a terrible idea. Its fan service and nothing else. Rocky statue makes sense and Robocop less sense but still some they both represent their respective cities good and bad but wolverine just happens to be canadian he's not fighting for Canada he doesn't explore Canadian myths and legends nor does he really represent anything Canadian in popular culture. So why put up a big ugly statue of him in the middle of your city for everyone to see?
