Someone in China Made a Set of Real-Life Hearthstone Cards

Turns out if Hearthstone was a physical card game, it would be pretty damn complicated to play.

Hearthstone, as we all know, is Blizzard's super popular online-card game, which was sort of born from the ashes of its real-life physical card game [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/127143-World-of-Warcraft-Trading-Card-Game-Comes-to-an-End]. The online format has proven to be quite successful, allowing Blizzard to make on-the-fly balance changes, and add new cards and mechanics with ease. But, what if there was a physical, real-life version of Hearthstone? Well, thanks to Chinese bootleggers, now there is!

A Games in Asia [http://www.gamesinasia.com/chinas-made-a-real-life-hearthstone-set-and-now-we-know-why-blizzard-hasnt/] reporter managed to get a hold of one of these sets, and was kind enough to post his impressions and some pictures online. First up, lets take a look at how Hearthstone would look as a real-life card game:

[gallery=3279]

While somewhat odd to see them as real, physical cards, these images should look pretty familiar to Hearthstone players. Included are two sets of every class' cards, four copies of every normal and legendary card, numerous tokens to place on your minions to show status effects like Taunt, Silence, and Deathrattle; health and attack wheels, enough for each player to have seven minions on the board at once; tokens to count bonus spell damage; and a mechanic for drawing random cards like you'd need to for the Priest's Mind Vision. Not included, were any of the cards from the Curse of Naxxramas expansion pack [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/11962-Hearthstone-Deck-Guide-for-Heroic-Naxxramas-The-Arachnid-Quarter].

Looking at that massive list of items required, you can see why Blizzard decided to keep this one digital, letting the computer handle all of those messy calculations.

The Games in Asia reporter said that the physical version of the game went considerably slower than the online version, but it was still a fun novelty to be able to actually hold the cards in your hands. He said that organizing entirely physical Hearthstone tournaments would probably be a nightmare, but it may be fun to have the finals held in physical form - just for the novelty of it.

As someone who has always been a fan of physical card games, this would be a super cool thing to have... even if the cards would probably be outdated by the time it was shipped to me. I really hope Blizzard makes something like this as a one-off special collectible at some point in the future.

That's pretty cool. I like that they've gone to the trouble to make a board and everything. Reminds me of how some people made some physical Cinderella Girls cards a few years back.

I've always wanted to know how I could make my own physical cards. I might do some googling later.

It really isn't all that difficult... provided you own a printing company.. like i do.. lol

I'm tempted to do this myself now lol

Wasn't there a ccg based on wow a few years back that was basically hearthstone in physical form? I guess it never took off and they reworked the concept into a digital card game.

Well, I don't own one of those, unfortunately.

Would you have any advice? Like what kind of materials I'd need? I imagine it'd not be worth the cost to hire a printing company just to make single cards.

Best bet would be to find a small print house nearby that has there own press, and specialises in short run stuff. There are a lot of them everywhere.

I'd recommend a 410gsm card stock for trading cards, synthetic would be your best bet so they don't dog ear and get horrible. "Borrowing" the artwork for the cards is the hardest part. If someone came in to my shop with the blizzard artwork and wanted me to print it for them, i would probably have to decline due to copyright issues.

Even if it's for private use and not resale?
I mean if I came in and asked for 20-50 copies of the whole thing I'd imagine you'd have a good reason for declining me, but if it's 1-5 copies, that'd be fine, right?

I can't imagine that Blizz would strike down on that and even if they did, that they would hold the printing shop responsible.
Obviously I don't own one, but is there something similar you've seen or heard happen?
Most likely it would be fine, but for my business personally, it would not be worth the risk to me. If it was for someone i knew personally, i wouldn't bat an eyelid, but i wouldn't knowingly reproduce something that wasn't licensed for a random off the street customer.

The amount of jobs we've turned down of people wanting Frozen stuff done and the like.

And yeah, in australia anyways, i've seen other business get hit by disney in particular, even just printing things not for re-sale.

Well, the cards I'd like to have printed are like these ones and the ones in my original post.

They're from an obscure Japanese cell phone game and from a franchise that has never been officially translated into English. I doubt any print shop would have a clue where they're from. I could claim they're my own artwork if they were freaking out over copyright and I'm making prototypes and they wouldn't know any better. Not that I have intentions to do so.

It's not like I wanna sell them anyway. I just want a couple printed that I can have as a cool memento of a game I enjoy since Bamco is too dumb to print the cards themselves when people have been asking for them for ages. Who wants to make money anyway?

Wow! I thought that sort of thing would be protected by Fair Use doctrine.
Not any more than printing off a bunch of Magic cards is protected by fair use. The company makes a card game. You are printing off (With no money to them) copies of those cards. That's pretty clearly doing something that could be seen as conflicted with their business, even if the money you spent isn't money that otherwise would have gone to them.

Not really like Hearthstone and it was around for a good long while, most of the life of WoW. It mainly sold well because of the in-game exclusive mounts and vanity items that one could find on loot cards. Game itself was fairly complicated at the outset but overall wasn't too bad. The problem was finding someone else who knew how to play it.

Ah, Never tried it myself but I remember seeing the cards back then and noticed that a lot of the art from those cards was reused for hearthstone. Because of that I just assumed it was the same game...

By comparison, Hearthstone is much easier to understand. There are similarities though, I've been going over some of my collection and the art is very similar. The mechanics are much different though, and thats a blessing. Trying to port over the original game would have made it just messy. Hell I've played a couple hands with friends and I still am fuzzy on the mechanics.
But I understand the comparison visually. I do wish they'd have ported the hero mechanic over though. I liked building decks around specific hero cards.

I would love to see how this game handles faceless manipulator, mind vision, mindgames, haunted creeper, mad bomber...you know what pretty much everything. I'd love to see how a physical version of Hearthstone handles every single mechanic that the digital format lends so well to, like permanent stat changing, random elements, and tokens.
