Nearly 50 Adorable 3DS Themes Available in Japan This Month - Update

There's no word on whether the themes will be available in North America, but Japanese 3DS owners have a choice of 47 3DS themes at a small price.

Update: Themes are now available in North America for 3DS owners [https://twitter.com/NintendoAmerica/status/519284730236522496] after the latest update, Nintendo of America confirmed. Five custom themes are available for free, and others can be purchased via the Theme Shop.

Original story: Japanese 3DS owners can pay up to 200 yen (about $1.82) for any of 47 themes in mid-October. The themes customize 3DS menus, as well as the 3DS camera, sound effects and background music, though Nintendo only shows off the home screen in a gallery of themes [http://www.nintendo.co.jp/3ds/theme/index.html].

Many themes display classic Nintendo characters, such as Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Yoshi. Other themes include Monster Hunter 4G, Yokai Watch, Animal Crossing, Legend of Zelda: Link Between Worlds, Blazblue, and Azure Striker Gunvolt. Other themes are not games-related, but add dots or stripes to the screens. The cheapest themes are 100 yen while the most expensive ones are 200 yen. Two themes, both simple color themes, are available for free. The list of every theme for Japan is available here. [http://www.nintendo.co.jp/3ds/theme/list/index.html] A firmware update to the 3DS this month will make the themes available to Japanese users.

Nintendo of Europe confirmed one month ago that 3DS themes will be available to European 3DS owners as well [https://twitter.com/NintendoEurope/status/505318049797668864]; however, the company has not said which themes will be available, the pricing, or the date. Nintendo of America will support themes as well, but details remain unannounced.

Nintendo announced one month ago the Nintendo of Australia [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/137129-New-3DS-with-Xenoblade-Chronicles-Coming-2015] has announced a launch date - November 21 - for the systems.

The Escapist has reached out to Nintendo of America about the company's plans for 3DS themes and will update if we hear anything new.

Interesting to see Nintendo jump on the background theme trend that Microsoft and Sony do. Wouldn't mind some of them to be honest, and I hope the Wii U gets some because I find it too dull on the menu screens. Perhaps they can do the premium themes or have them be unlockables in certain games like how the XBLA version of Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie did. Only thing that would push me away from them is if they were outrageously priced in North American regions, but I doubt that.

I'm curious as to why there's a BlazBlue theme. Was there a BlazBlue game on the 3DS that I missed?

Still, would love to get the Monster Hunter one. Assuming it's released over here...

Two of them, in fact. BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II and BlazBlue: Clone Phantasma (the latter of which is a crap budget eShop game).

I'm surprised they're not giving the option for some sort of bundle or season pass for themes. Most people won't buy more than two or three at the most normally, but if you give 'em 10 for the price of 7, Nintendo makes more money, player gets more themes (that they won't even use), everybody wins.

P.S. Thanks

...Noticing a lack of Samus and Metroid ...This will not go unforgotten Nintendo! D:
Seriously they could have used Zero Mission's fun art style or some Prime renders gah....just anything but Other M.

Most of those are ick, but the zelda one looks nice. If we get them, We'll have to see if there are any worth forking over money for.

...wait, where's the Animal Crossing one? WHERE IS IT?! ;.;
In europe, we won't be getting as many themes as they do in japan for some odd reason... there's almost nothing here anyway.

I kind of suprised that they are doing this now.

OT- So when us Brit going to get that many themes (the same as the US) but in saying so I only got enough money on my 3DS balance for the purchase theme and not the theme based on a game or character.

Eh, I like my interfaces clean and non-distracting, the only ones I might consider are the animal crossing ones.

I just got the Luigi theme for my 3DS might get the Zelda one too. They look very nice and the theme music sounds great, though I might occasionally switch back to a more basic theme as they can be a little distracting.
