Friday Box-Office: Affleck's Girl Fights Off Dracula

Mystery-thriller edges out horror-prequel

Gone Girl [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escape-to-the-movies/9779-Gone-Girl-Fantastically-Suspenseful-Thiller] is looking like it could end up as one of the bigger box-office hits of director David Fincher's critically-lauded but not always audience-rewarded career.

The Shutter Island [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/moviesandtv/columns/moviebob/12360-Gone-Girl-and-Fight-Club-are-Good-Movies-for-the-Wrong-Reasons] in 2010.

Though not a runaway hit, Universal Monsters [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escape-to-the-movies/9795-Dracula-Untold-Review] shared-universe of films.

Disney's family flick, Alexander and The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/134345-Alexander-Gets-Terrible-Horrible-No-Good-Very-Bad-Trailer] bowed in third place, while last week's haunted-doll feature Annabelle dropped to fourth. The Judge, a father/son legal drama with Robert Downey Jr and Robert Duvall, debuted in fifth.

So an R rated film is beating out a movie that's PG-13, but arguably could have benefited from being at least an M?

I really hope that studios get the hint that playing it safe doesn't always mean it's safe.

That's also assuming that not 'playing it safe' would have made it a better, more widely appealing movie, which I doubt. Dracula's faults have more to do a rather bleh story (well, the plot is fine, but it jumps through it so quick it's hard to give a shit about much) and characters.

Seen both, both good, Left more scared after gone girl than Dracula though, for obvious reasons, if people have seen GG.
