Game of Thrones Actor: A Movie Could Happen - Update

Tywin Lannister actor Charles Dance says HBO may be talking about bringing Game of Thrones to the big screen.

Update: HBO's Mara Milialian has responded to our query with the following succinct statement: "There are no plans to do [Game of Thrones] movies."

Original Story: If there's one thing that HBO's <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/game%20of%20thrones>Game of Thrones television series has proven, it's that TV audiences have an appetite for bloody, betrayal-laced fantasy that, up until now, has gone almost completely untapped. The obvious question, in turn, is whether or not movie audiences might be interested in the same thing. Sure, people will pay cash for epic romps through Middle Earth, but how well would the bloody lands of Westeros fair at the box office? If a recent interview with one of the show's actors can be believed, it's a question that Hollywood might be getting closer to answering.

Speaking about Game of Thrones recently, actor Charles Dance (a.k.a. Tywin Lannister) revealed that the people behind the scenes may be discussing bringing it to the big screen. "There's talk of eventually trying to do a feature film, but I don't know which of the storylines," said Dance, speaking with <a href=http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/11/18/charles-dance-on-tywin-lannister-s-s5-return-a-game-of-thrones-movie-and-sexy-peter-dinklage.html>The Daily Beast. "There's so much to cram into a film."

This, of course, runs contrary to recent statements from HBO which, earlier this year, indicated that there are <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/136106-HBO-No-Conversations-Going-on-About-Game-of-Thrones-Movie>"no conversations" going on about potentially expanding the show into a full-fledged film. HBO has yet to comment on the Dance's statements. The Escapist, in turn, has reached out to the network to see if we could learn any additional information.

Even with Dance's comments still unconfirmed however, we could definitely see reasons that HBO might consider investing in film offshoots. It's no secret that the TV series is swiftly catching up with the still-incomplete A Song of Ice and Fire book series on which it's based. It's more than possible that a film (or two) could be used as a way to appease and distract fans if the show needs to take a break so series creator <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/george%20rr%20martin>George R.R. Martin can finish <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/135000-Game-of-Thrones-Book-Series-May-Extend-to-Eight-Books-Update>the final two books.

The funny thing is, I think some of the content HBO has shown on GoT in a two-plus-hour format would risk garnering an NC-17 rating.

I'd be up for a movie- particularly if it meant getting one of the books published and perhaps lessening the risk of the show diverging farther from their plotline.

A film about the Mad King and the war to overthrow him could be interesting, seeing how Jamie Lannister got his name "The Kingslayer" would be cool.

And seeing Sean Bean as Ned Stark again would be amazing.

Yeah, I think that would be the best choice, since it wouldn't actually effect the current series, or make one book/season/whatever into a smaller format. The death of the mad king, with it's great battles and the like, would be PERFECT as a film, particularly since it doesn't feel like it would fit into the HBO ten episode seasons we have. The best we have on the era are the DVD history things, well done, but I film about it would be fantastic. Although, I am not sure it's the proper time to reveal whatever was the secret of Lyanna's death, or the truthfulness of a particular theory about it.

Yeah, Robert's rebellion is more of a closed narrative anyway. So I could see them pulling something like that off.

Shouldn't "TV audiences have an appetite for bloody, betrayal-laced fantasy" be "TV audiences have an appetite for bloody, betrayal, boob-laced fantasy"? Anyway if they made one I would watch it.

The rebellion would be the perfect idea for a movie. But I'd like to see something like the Targaryeans first conquering Westeros. Or the war against the Wights that saw The Wall go up.

That or the Dance of Dragons, seeing the Targaryean civil war with all that entails would work well in a film.

I'm with the others here, i could easily get behind a sort of spin off like the rebellion, as for a movie of A Song o Ice and Fire, no thank you.
As much as i love the TV series, it is a series of 4 seasons currently, each season containing 10 episodes each one of which is an hour long, making a grand total of ~40h worth of content. Even with something that huge, i have began reading the books because they offer up plenty more detail, compressing any significant portion of it down to 2h would be a pacing disaster. Besides, Game of Thrones is already essentially a movie, maybe not quite decked out in all the fanciest of tech, but it is pretty damn good for a TV show.

A movie about Robert's Rebellion or Aegon's conquering of the seven kingdoms would be pretty cool. Even telling the story of some of the crazy kings like Baelor would be good. I'd hate it if they switched to finishing off the book series in movies though. I've read the books and it seems to much info for a movie to do right I think and it's working great as a tv show so why change it. The episodes are so long they're practically mini movies anyway.

A season as it is has to cut a *lot* from the books just to fit into 10x 1 hour episodes. What story would a two hour movie tell that two episodes cannot?

Having said that, if there was a cinema release of a GoT film with the TV show cast and crew, I'd probably see it whatever story it told. :)

The only storyline I can think of that could become a GoT movie is the main storyline from the PS3/360 Game of Thrones video game... Literally the only thing I like about that game, to be honest, since it felt like the equivalent to how one would do "historical fiction" or something like that...

Other than that, too bad it's not going to happen... Then again, a GoT movie's that one thing I think about the least, anyway...

Hmmm.

The production values of the show as it is are so high that it might seem redundant...

I would love a movie about Robert's Rebellion though. A prequel of sorts to the show.

A man can dream...
