Just Cause 3 Won't Ship With Multiplayer

Avalanche Studios' Just Cause 3 will be a single-player affair when it launches in 2015, though adding multiplayer modes post-release is a possibility.

After months of Game Informer [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/130227-Avalanche-Studios-Teases-Just-Cause-3-With-New-Development-Video], Avalanche co-founder Christofer Sundberg dashed fans' hopes of being able to play Just Cause 3 with others--at least at first. "Maybe sometime down the line, we'll take Rico into the modern world of multiplaying," Sundberg teased.

The previous games in the series also shipped as single-player affairs, but a fan-made (and publisher-approved) mod [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/130584-Just-Cause-2s-Multiplayer-Mod-Now-Integrated-on-Steam] for Just Caused 2 added an ambitious multiplayer component to the game, which Sundberg says has kept people playing it years after its release. "The mod is absolutely fantastic... We owe those guys a lot. They have actually supported the game and helped it stay alive so many years after it was released." That doesn't mean Just Cause 3's multiplayer potential is up to you, modders--Sundberg was quick to add that he doesn't "expect the fans to make the multiplayer" for the next game in the series. The omission of multiplayer was a result of a strong focus on the single-player sandbox experience.

And as for the post-launch possibility of patching in multiplayer? With Square Enix's cloud gaming subsidiary Shinra Technologies, it could be an option. No collaboration between Avalanche and Shinra (that was a strange sentence to type) has been officially announced, but Shinra's Jacob Navok teased, "We're working on a possible future collaboration with Avalanche Studios." As for Navok's vision of the future of gaming? "Cloud games that are developed from the ground up as well as games that are in an existing pipeline that we will enhance... For example, taking a game that doesn't have multiplayer right now and easily giving it multiplayer is what we imagine for enhancements."

Just Cause originally launched in 2006, where it was stuck in a weird in-between-generations period and appeared on the PC, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. Just Cause 2 came out four years later on the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3, and received generally favorable reviews. Earlier this year [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/132074-Just-Cause-Creator-60-Games-Dont-Make-Sense-Anymore], Sundberg stated that he thought the era of $60 AAA games was "not healthy" and said that publishers were "still stuck where we were 15 years ago." We'll see how Square Enix feels about the state of AAA games when Just Cause 3 launches next year.

Good! I've been waiting for the day AAA companies decided to DLC common features.
Next they'll DLC the Options Menu, DLC the End Credits, DLC controller support, and if you want voices/music in your game, you can buy the day one DLC for only $5.99! What a deal!
One day in the not too distant future we'll be buying a $60 disk but the game itself will be an additional $60 DLC!

As opposed to, say, making a game with rushed singleplayer and tacked on mutiplayer because they didn't have time/resources to do either of them well?

Not every game has to have a multi-player mode. Not every game has a have a single-player mode. I'd rather see games that picked one or the other and make it excellent than pull a "Well, we gave you both, but neither of them are very good".

To be fair they haven't said that it'll even be done for certain and even if it is there's no announcement Tha it'll cost anything. That said an expansion would be the fairest way as they get paid for their work and we would get more for our money.

That's ok. I'll just wait for the magical modder fairy to drop the Just Cause 3 Multiplayer Mod into my steam library while I sleep like it did with the JC2 Multiplayer Mod.

More than likely multiplayer will be free dlc or possibly as said before, a full blown expansion. The fact that they are actually working on the single player experience rather than just attempting to shove it aside for arbitrary multiplayer shows extremely high integrity. I love multiplayer in games, but if you have to hurt something just to tack on a feature, you are better off focusing and then adding after.

I plan to buy this day 1 as JC2 was so much fun
Nothing says fun quite like grabbing a minigun from a base and gimping along, doing as much property damage as humanly possible.

So looking forward to this. I loved Just Cause 2, it was such an amazing large world and fun to mess around in. My only hope is they make the third person shooting a lot better as for me it always resulted in me running from a fight because there were too many guys and with bad aiming I was losing a lot of ammo. Beyond that though, the game is amazing.

it might have been a missed opportunity, but if it was between developing a multiplayer component and polishing the singleplayer, i think its the right call

This is the correct choice, Mr Just Cause man. Your chosen trail shall lead you to riches and adoration. More or less.

Oh for fuck's sake! Why would you not do that after seeing the success of the mod?! That's bullshit! The game's obviously crying out for it!

Oh. Er...

Well then... in that case... Do focus on the singleplayer and not make it totally pants, that would be good. Please, thank you, ta very much.

Ahem. Carry on, Avalanche.

I think the only way we'll know for sure whether this is a good move is to test the results.

If they didn't pack in a multiplayer option and the single player is good? Fair enough. If they didn't pack in a multiplayer option and the single player sucks? I think we can cry foul. I don't know if the quality of the multiplayer would even matter.

And...nothing of value was lost.

The recent successes of games like Shadow of Mordor and Alien Isolation show that you don't need multiplayer to make a successful game.

"But, where's the multiplayer?" should only come up, IMO, if the previous iteration of the series had it out of the box. Otherwise? Let the devs make the game they want to make. Let them decide if they want to spend resources on multiplayer. They have enough pressures from the craziness of AAA-development as it is. They don't need any extra pressure from us.

This is more like how the Metro series focused strictly on the singleplayer while having no multiplayer (I don't remember if Metro Last Light had it but I know the first one didn't). As someone who doesn't usually care for multiplayer I'm very happy when a developer focuses all their effort on the singleplayer.
