New God of War in the Works

Sony Santa Monica is actively working on the next God of War game, but it's likely still years away.

Ready for a new God of War game? Well, the next installment in the PlayStation-exclusive series is in the works, though you probably won't be playing it any time soon. IGN is reporting [http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/12/06/next-god-of-war-officially-confirmed-to-be-in-development] that Sony Santa Monica Creative Director Cory Barlog confirmed that development on the next God of War game is indeed underway, but we're "a year or two" away from hearing any concrete details about it.

The news comes out of the PlayStation Experience happening today and tomorrow in Las Vegas, Nevada, during a God of War retrospective. Barlog wouldn't divulge any details about what's next for Kratos, but he did definitely say it wouldn't be a prequel to the existing God of War series. The studio behind the franchise suffered a round of layoffs [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/132763-Sony-God-of-War-Dev-Layoffs-the-Result-of-a-Reboot-at-the-Studio] earlier this year, at which point Sony's Scott Rohde said, "You guys are just going to have to be patient and wait for us to announce what's coming next from Santa Monica."

According to IGN, Barlog stated that he would have more to share within the next year or two, but wouldn't confirm whether or not series star Kratos would star in the next game.

Of course it is because you couldn't just let Kratos and his miserable carcass rot after God of War 3.

They didn't say kratos would be coming back, just that a new entry in the series was in development, which is a no brainier considering how profitable the series is for Sony.

Don't see where they can take this now, especially if they fall back onto Kratos again. The entire Greek Pantheon is dead by the end of GoW3, with Kratos committing suicide at the end of the game. Even if they retcon it to have Kratos survive his suicide attempt, where in the world could they take that story now? Kratos' vengeance is done. There are no more deities left to kill. The world is in ruins thanks to him. What more could be added to his story that wouldn't be a ludicrously-forced asspull?

Maybe they can pull off something if they forego Kratos, but that would still require an entirely separate universe "Final Fantasy"-style in order to work due to, once again, the now extinct Greek Pantheon leaving the series nowhere to go. Can't have a GoW game without gods of some sort to kill, now can we?

If this is the case, please don't have it involve Kratos. The poor man has been milked to death, and it would be better at this point to have a new anti-hero protagonist because really you can't do much more with the series. All loose ends were pretty much tied up in 3, with all the other ones being tied up in the prequel games that were made.

Kratos unleashed the plagues on the world, but gave humanity hope after murdering all the gods.

Jesus is next.

Thinkaboutit. All these games have been are an aggressive allegory for the fall of pagan religions.

THINK ABOUT IT.

OT:
Yeah... Maybe I'll play it. I was pretty happy with the end of 3, even if I thought it had a lot of forward-momentum even after concluding. Still, nothing worth speculating yet.

It would have to be if you are a new person who kills Kratos.

Oh Dear FSM I hope not. There's too much pandering outside of video games to over glorify Abrahamic Religions as it is.
You play as Jesus and kill Kratos to cement the power of the LAAAWDDD confirmed.
Reviews are rolling in.

There are people Kratos hasn't killed yet?
What's he gonna do? Fight Nordic and Egypian gods?

I'm going to go against the grain a bit here.

Look, I get the criticisms. I've had a few myself. But I don't care. The God of War series is good. I enjoy it. I'm fully prepared to play a new game in the series and enjoy it. Will we play as Kratos or some new God Slayer? I don't know, but I can't wait to find out.

Actually, if they went the route of having a story about some other characters in some other religion dealing with his own Pantheon that'd be pretty interesting. God of War's gameplay is already quite refined; what it needs is a new story to tell, and a new setting to tell it in.

So yeah, Nordic GoW, where you play as "Hiccup" and you have to defeat Loki, who's overthrown the Aesir with the help of the Giants would be kind of awesome.

So long?

I'm kind of surprised that they didn't start development of the next game the day after 3 released.

As for playing as someone else... it didn't work so well for Prototype 2.

It better not be another prequel. We've had 3 so far. It's getting to be like Metroid. (Sequel to Fusion, too, please. Thanks, Nintendo.) I didn't even bother with Ascension, because I was tired of prequels where he was servant to Ares or the other gods, or was a god himself, but for some reason easily dies. The PSP games are good, don't get me wrong, but we need something new.

How about Norse mythology. Ragnarok anyone? Or they should go with detailed Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Mesoamerican, etc. mythology. Or a mishmash? You know you want to fight Set while making way through the realm of Mictlantecuhtli and hitch a ride on Sleipnir. I'm down with a new protagonist if that's what it takes to make the story work.

If it's another game about Kratos killing Minotaurs, I'm done with the series. The attempts to shake up the formula with new gameplay mechanics fell way on its ass in Ascension, and we already have 5 games worth of the more refined gameplay. The series has effectively eliminated everything about the Greek Pantheon multiple times over, so it's had to move into the realm of the completely made up (see also: Ascension).

If it's a game set in a different mythology, then I might actually be interested.

But remember, any sequel to Fusion has to have Adam in it. You head back to your ship to heal and all you're get is "I haven't authorized you to refill your missiles, lady."

I would love to see the Norse pantheon done up in a way that stays a little more true to how fucked up they also were (Odin was very much like Zeus in the mythos, and Loki wasn't necessarily the bad guy, at least the way I interpreted it). Some viking-archetype goes after the gods after some perceived wrong, wrecks Asgard, tears his way through Hel and Valhalla, kills Thor and takes up the hammer? Yeah I could go for that.

Hmmmm, there could be promise to this IF this takes place after Kratos' actions in GoW3. The whole world is fucked by then, but if I remember correctly there are still some people left in an otherwise barren wasteland. Maybe you could play as a new guy, trying to rebuild a thoroughly ruined and almost dead world where all the gods have gone away and monsters are roaming free (gotta fight something in a GoW game), that could definetely show some promise-wait I just described Dark Souls didn't I? Shit.

Or maybe they could just have a new mythology for their setting. Yeah, that could work.

If its about Kratos again then NOOOOOOOOOOO!

If its about some other set of deities then yeah sure. Back when ascension was still just a "another God of War game in the works" I thought they were gonna choose another set of gods to butcher in glorious ultraviolence, but nope, they brought back his miserable ass, never played the game so I don't know maybe he got happier.
