GX3 Bringing Inclusivity to Gaming Conventions in December 2015

GaymerX's third gaming convention, GX3, has a venue and a date set for 2015.

GaymerX [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/gaymerx] is holding GX3: Everyone Games December 11-13, 2015 in San Jose, California, according to an update to the convention's Kickstarter page. Early bird tickets are on sale.

GaymerX wasn't sure a third was going to happen [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/137058-GX3-Everyone-Games-Kickstarter-Launches-from-GaymerX] due to financial problems. Several developers pledged sponsorships, and GaymerX began a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for GX3. The event was successfully funded. GX3 will take place in the San Jose Marriott.

Jennifer Hale, the voice for Commander Shepard in the Mass Effect series, will be attending GX3 as a Boss of Honor. There will be panels, game tournaments, tabletop games, live music, cosplay, as well as a chance to play games by sponsored attendees. Other Bosses of Honor are Zach Weiner of Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal, Ellen McLain of Portal's GLaDOS, John Patrick Lowrie of Team Fortress 2's Sniper, and Rob Jagnow of Cogs and Extrasolar.

Earlybird tickets [http://www.eventbrite.com/e/gx3-everyone-games-tickets-8381785145] vary in price depending on what kind of access you're looking for, but the basic GX3 ticket price for the weekend is about $70. Kickstarter backers should have received an email with a ticket code.

We want to include everyone....as long as they're willing to pay $70+ for admission. Sounds about right.

Also, did anyone tell them that bigots, homophobes and general assholes fall into the "everyone" group? So that whole inclusivity goal is somewhat self-defeating.

Supposedly because cons are apparently primarily hook-up hotspots or something and it gets awkward having straights tell you they're not into you. That was the newest reason that made some amount of sense given last time this popped up for me at least.

I don't know, I'm not going to bash them for having it, but it is a bit of a silly basis/idea for a con since unless you dress "stereotypically gay" or tell everyone you run into that you're gay, nobody knows or cares enough to go out of their way to harass you when they spent $50+ to see everything any con has to offer.

I still do not understand the befuddlement that some people feel (or claim to feel) whenever this topic gets brought up. Is it really *that* difficult to understand why a relatively small minority group that has historically been subject to a lot of hostility might value a convention that's specifically advertised as a safe space for them? Hell, if you have to ask why this thing exists then you're probably not the target audience, so why does it matter?

It's a convention that primarily focuses on LGBT people and topics that normally would not be discussed or explored at other convention s (from representation, inclusion, depicting queer romance, discussing abuse and harrasement faced by LGBT gamers in the gaming community) and offering a safe space from the homophobia and transphobia experienced by LGBT gamers. In other words it's a specific service which is not offered by any other convention.
