New Stunning Image of Famous Nebula Revealed

In celebration of its upcoming 25th anniversary, the Hubble Space Telescope has once again photographed the Pillars of Creation in the Eagle Nebula.

The Hubble Space Telescope [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/hubble] went online in 1990, and its 25th anniversary is coming up this April. In celebration, scientists have been pointing Hubble at some old but classic sights in order to recapture them with upgraded technology for a better view.

One of Hubble's most famous images is of a feature in the Eagle Nebula, which is 6,500 light-years away, called the Pillars of Creation. The image captures clouds of interstellar gas and dust - which serve as nurseries and birthing spots for stars - being eroded by the harsh light and UV radiation of nearby newborn stars.

The first image of the nebula was taken in 1995, and Hubble's revisit, 20 years later, observes the feature in visible and near infrared light.

"We have caught these pillars at a very unique and short-lived moment in their evolution," Paul Scowen of Arizona State University told NBC News [http://www.nbcnews.com/science/space/hubble-revisits-pillars-creation-stunning-photo-n280241]. "The ghostly bluish haze around the dense edges of the pillars is material getting heated up and evaporating away into space."

Not only are we seeing the Pillars of Creation in more detail, we are also seeing how the structure has changed over the years. Though the changes may be imperceptible to some at these vast distances, the features are actually in a great amount of flux. One of the small jet-like structures, for instance, has been expanding at about 450,000 miles per hour and has traveled 60 billion miles in the past 20 years.

Check out the comparison image, as well as a new infrared image of the Pillars of Creation, below.

Pillars of Creation be had! Welcome to Giant Space Hand!

(Well, that was my impression, anyway.)

"Hmm, this star looks nice."

*Pluck*

Yeah, pretty much.

I always saw it as a dog jumping up onto the post (far right part being the dog and the middle part is the post).
Never saw a hand before, nice catch FJ.

Does that mean that some of the original colours are preserved or are they all create from spectrometer data and added in post like normal?

I always thought that the far left pillar looked like a camel looking to the right with it's head held up.

Seriously though, my jaw dropped and I let out a whispered "ooooooh wooooow" when I saw this and I wasn't even being sarcastic. The only other time I did that was when I saw the Vulcan bomber take flight on the first public display flight for about 20 years, and let me tell you, that was one magnificent beast. The pilot cried, put it that way.

Nah, sorry. Color in these photos is always added in post, and it's not to look pretty - every color filter is meant to represent something. The fact that it is gorgeous is just a happy accident.

The grasping severed claw of an angry ancient space God. If you pan down aways you'll find the severed head, with a talking Racoon and telepathic dog living inside.

Are the colours not chosen from the data collected by a spectrometer or are they arbitrary?

Check this out, it has a lot of info on the subject.

...Why is there a Bear in that Hand?

Also, the PoC is still piercing the galactic heavens with its fingers... If only we can touch it back with our fingers...

That is beautiful, yet with everyone talking about the hand.
Since I've been playing it recently, it looks like this kind of hand.

Welp, they might just be real.

We might discover a Mass relay.
We might die in the first contact war.
And we all might never have to see a horrible third game ending. (Yes, I know I'm beating a dead horse ... with a stick.)

I can now never look at the Eagle or Pillars of Creation nebulae with the same eyes again...
