Marvel Comics Announces Uncanny Inhumans for April 2015

Marvel has revealed plans to launch an Inhumans comic series with writer Charles Soule and artist Steve McNiven.

Update: In the original story I mistakenly said Sony Pictures owned the rights to the X-Men film franchise. It is, in fact, Fox that owns those rights. My apologies the error and any resultant confusion.

Marvel has revealed plans today to launch a new <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/comicsandcosplay/12522-Everything-You-Need-To-Know-About-Marvel-s-Inhumans>Inhumans comic. The new book, dubbed Uncanny Inhumans, will begin in April and be headed up by writer Charles Soule and artist Steve McNiven.

Marvel fans will likely recognize them as being the same duo behind the publisher's recent <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/comicsandcosplay/12470-The-Escapist-Reviews-Marvel-Death-of-Wolverine>Death of Wolverine event. Speaking about the new book, Soule affirmed that it wouldn't just be another iteration of the Inhuman series that he's has been writing since early 2014. While Uncanny Inhumans will have ties to that title, he stated that intends to keep it grounded in a "street-level approach" as opposed to the "royal-level story" of Inhuman.

"If Inhuman is the big, royal-level story focused on the various Inhuman factions and their struggle for control over the Inhuman 'nation,' then Uncanny Inhumans will take more of a street-level approach," he said, speaking to IGN. "It won't be quite so focused on New Attilan and the struggles related to it." Soule would go on to say that Uncanny's primary lead would be the character Black Bolt, and that the "inciting events" behind the story in Uncanny will take place in Inhuman issues 11 and 12. He also confirmed that the villain of the book's first story arc will be Kang the Conqueror.

One thing that Soule wouldn't directly address are rumors that Marvel is working to position the Inhumans <a href=<a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/138262-Marvel-Studios-Phase-3-Plans-Revealed>more prominently in their universe so they can gradually phase out the X-Men. These rumors stem from Fox's continued refusal to relinquish the film rights to famous mutant team, a move that that's prevented Disney and Marvel from integrating the heroes into its wildly popular cinematic universe. These rumors probably aren't helped by Marvel calling Soule's new book "Uncanny," a title first pioneered by the Uncanny X-Men back in the 1960s.

You quoted this twice. And like @COMaestro said, Sony doesn't own the X-Men film rights.

The quotes were intentional.

Thank you guys though for pointing out the Sony/Fox mix-up. Fixed and noted in the story.

I will laugh my ass off if Marvel just drops the X-men and turns them all into Inhumans.

How is he planning on doing a street level story with BLACK BOLT o_O and the first villain is KANG. How does ANY of that sound street level?

Thank you. I had the same thought. Frankly I don't have high hopes for this book. Soule isn't bad, just extremely medicore. The only thing I've really liked of his is She-Hulk series. I mean he did make Thunderbolts a decent series ( a tremendous task considering how bad that series started) but nothing of his has ever made me super excited to see his name on it. I also don't like the fact that he is now writing two Inhuman books. Were there no other writers who wanted to pick this up? Kieron Gillen, Al Ewing, Majorie Wu, or Warren Ellis would all be great candidates I think. I would love to see Matt Fraction take it on but considering how well that went when he was supposed to start the current Inhuman book I don't think that is going to happen any time soon.

I gotta admit, I DO like Soule's current take on the Inhumans. I kinda wish it didn't start off a little shaky with powers since it was kind of a run of 'fire powers', 'earth powers', 'flying', for a bit but it got better with the one who's ability was she could hear across the entire world but only one word she decided to look for, that was when it started getting better. Well, for me at any rate.

The only real problem is since Karnak got killed off (and he was always one of the coolest Inhumans) and Black Bolt/Maximus are now AWOL even with recent stories, it kinda makes it hard to invest much in the royal family since it's only been Medusa, Gorgon and Triton (and Triton hasn't even done anything, come on guy, your nations an island now you must be up to SOMETHING helpful).

It would be nice to see some other talents kicking into this (Hickman isn't allowed after he had Thanos somehow SURVIVE fighting Black Bolt, as if his Deviant ass is anywhere near on par with Ikaris who LOST) but I can deal with it being Soule.

Still hoping that the Inhumans movie isn't how it sounds and they do X-men 2.0, I'm hoping they do a horror movie where researchers find Attilan and get bushwhacked by Medusa's hair/Triton in the water/Gorgon or Karnak causing an avalanche. Y'know, all that stuff.

According to reports it isn't really the X Men film rights that set off the Fox v Marvel feuding. It was renegotiating the merchandising cuts from anything related to the movies. Marvel wanted Fox to take a deal similar to what Sony accepted, where the film rights timelines were extended and softened in exchange for Marvel taking the merchandising money. (And yes it can get weird. The Merchadising now is somewhere like 60/40, but Marvel still has absolute veto on any and all merchandising deals, hence no DOFP toys or Burger King meals). Really the other thing that Marvel wanted back from Fox was the Fantastic Four related "cosmic" characters. Galactus, Silver a Surfer, Annihilus and Blastar. And they offered to extend Foxs license for Daredevil, Punisher and Ghost Rider which were expiring in return. Marvel isn't really that anxious to get the X Men film rights back as they don't fit real well into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it has been built. Yeah they would be nice to have, but Marvel makes money off them either way. Whereas Spider-Man or the FF they can just drop in with few headaches.

These rumors, of course, stem from Fox's continued refusal to relinquish the film rights to X-Men, a move that that's prevented Disney and Marvel from integrating the famous mutants into its wildly popular cinematic universe. Of course, calling this book Uncanny, a title first pioneered by Uncanny X-Men, probably also doesn't help.
Neither does Tom Brevoort flat out saying that promoting the X-Men line is low priority for Marvel these days.

The profit that Marvel's publishing division turns out is peanuts for a company like Disney. Its true value is as an IP farm, and if they have IP that they not only don't fully control but the promotion of which can actually be seen as advertising for a competitor's franchise...well, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if we see the X-Men shunted off to their own pocket corner of the MU or even axed entirely within the next few years.

Not un-clunky name is not un-clunky!

I was confused for a sec, as last I heard Inhumans wasn't releasing until 2018 or so? Then I remembered Marvel also do comics. Oh yeah!

If they wanted me to like Inhumans, they shouldn't have fridged one of the only two Inhumans I actually liked.
