Star Fox Zero Won't Have "Amiibo-Locked Content"

Shigeru Miyamoto says that the Star Fox amiibo unlocks will be purely cosmetic.

Ever since the release of Nintendo's Star Fox Zero [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/amiibo], and that any amiibo interaction would be purely cosmetic.

"In terms of being able to unlock content [with amiibos], I don't really want to go down that path," explained Miyamoto. "For this game, I think of it more as, for people who have the amiibo, they're going to get a little something extra and that's how I'm planning on it with this game. So rather than actual abilities or things like that changing in the game, it would be like getting a different skin for the Arwing or something like that."

"In terms of what I'm doing with Star Fox, I'm really not thinking about there being locked content or there being a mode that you won't be able to play if you don't have one. Since we already have the existing Smash Bros. amiibos I basically want to put in something so if you already have those amiibos, I imagine people will try and tap them on Star Fox anyway, and I want to make sure there is something that gives them a nice charge when they do that," he added, confirming that Star Fox Zero most likely won't have it's own unique amiibos, and will simply use the Fox and Falco Super Smash Bros. amiibos.

This is really the way that amiibos should be used - little cosmetic extras.

Well that is good.

A few years ago, I was one who was more easy on Nintendo, despite some bad things they had going on. Sure, the Youtube thing could be considered bad, but I didn't see it as the worst thing ever. Yes, it can be free advertising, but it's a companies choice in the end, and the youtubers decide what they want to do.

However, the Amiibo debacle has been really bad. I like the idea that buying a toy is good for more than one game, however the lack of certain characters in stock, many I believe can only be used for certain games, is bad. Splatoon was the worst where content was locked behind it, which the Splatoon Amiibos where sold out quickly to scalpers, and many people couldn't get it. Cosmetic only is the best option. Sure, some will be sore that they can't have a certain design in a game because of it, but they can still play everything the game has to offer.

Also, hopefully the idea of street pass being necessary to do certain aspects of games will go away. If you aren't in Japan and/or play a game much later after it comes out, your chances of using that aspect are gone.

Amiibos? As long they only bring side-grades, cosmetic choices or they don't add something too different, they can work.

What's fun is that Amiibo on Smash is a thing that is great against Amiibos. It can be a cool feature as long it doesn't ruin other features.

Funny... I thought all "Amiibo-Locked Content" were basically "little cosmetic extras" overall...

Other than that, there goes my possibility of getting a Crystal Amiibo, then...

You will still see the supply-demand problems with this next batch if the feeling in my gut is right. Prove me wrong Nintendo, screw over the scalpers by having a limited first two days release followed by a massive flood of merchandise. You would make me laugh so very hard.

Good. I can't find a squid amiibo to unlock the content I'm missing for splatoon, which irks me greatly.

Also, got some malformed HTML in there, m8. That Italics command wasn't closed on splatoon.

Mmm. Seems to be regional.
I found so many amiibos so easily around here...
OK, sure, really rare ones are hard (I wanted a Rosalina, but... That's not going to happen I guess). Also, rather oddly, about half the Amiibos my local store had were clearly imported direct from Japan (japanese packaging), but still...

At the moment it's trivial to get hold of splatoon amiibos. (which, logically, is how it should be, because they unlock quite a bit compared to a lot of the others).

Anyway, that seems to be the situation in this country. Pity America is being screwed over so hard with them though.

I find I quite like them (as figures. Not overly sure about the gameplay features involved), though I admit the content tied to the splatoon ones really does make me a little uneasy...

It's good to hear the starfox game isn't going to repeat that trick...

Good, as long as they keep their promise. The Splatoon Amiibo situation is the final reason that sent me over the edge and made me decide not to buy it for now. Maybe I'll get Star Fox first.

Non-aesthetic content should never have to be unlocked by Amiibo. The current market and the way Big N is handling the supply chain just does not allow anyone without a lot of spare time to be at a store/website when an Amiibo wave goes on sale, or anyone without a lot of cash to pay scalpers, to get the figures that unlock the functionality they desire.

Of course, the Amiibo locked content issue could be somewhat lessened if they would just release the NFC character cards. But, I've got a feeling they've put that idea on the back burner so demand for any rare Amiibo they wish to re-release and demand for any Amiibo in stores will be high.

Indeed. A lot of the social aspects of 3DS games need to have a work around. Nintendo is still thinks every place in the world is as cramped as Japan, therefore running into someone else with a 3DS is guaranteed (every 5 minutes). I'm also meh on the multiplayer on handhelds, because of the issue with finding fellow 3DS owners with my interests, and 2.4 GHz Wifi connections being spotty when I'm home.

I'm put in mind of Bravely Default, which gave you imaginary friends if you didn't have real ones with the game.

Problem there is the whole rebuilding the village part. They gave you AI friends for the battle aspect, but you needed street pass to gather people to rebuild the village. You can do a little bit at first, but then unlocking new areas takes 99 hours with only one person. While there's nothing necessary you need from the village stuff story wise, you lose access to special items such as the experience egg, outfits, and other stuff.

You guys need to work on getting your headlines to match the articles

Headline: "Star Fox Zero Won't Have "Amiibo-Locked Content" "

First line of article: "Shigeru Miyamoto says that the Star Fox amiibo unlocks will be purely cosmetic."

These directly contradict each other, I do know what you mean in that there's no gameplay locked by Amiibos, but cosmetic unlocks are STILL unlocks! I'm happy there's nothing important that's not accessible though

A better headline would have been

Star Fox Zero Won't Have "Amiibo-Locked Gameplay Content"

I don't think they're going to drop it, as they've already implemented a solution. Most stores that carry their products (Best Buy, Gamestop, Toys R Us, etc.) have Nintendo Network hubs. You Streetpass those like you would a bunch of players, and you get 10 visitors, plus (probably) any employees that are taking advantage of having said hub at their place of employment.
