Ready For A Giant Robot Duel? Japan Accepts America's Challenge

Japanese and American robot manufacturers will prove their superiority in the best possible way - giant robot duels.

Giant robot fights are a staple of science fiction and anime, not to mention <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escape-to-the-movies/7705-Pacific-Rim>one of the coolest action movie concepts ever imagined. But even with all our scientific advancements, <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/141106-DARPA-Robotics-Challenge-Finalists-Keep-Falling-Over>seeing a battle in reality seems highly unlikely. Or at least it did until very recently. Two weeks ago, American robot manufacturer Megabot issued a challenge to Japan-based Suidobashi Heavy Industries: Host a duel between each company's giant robot. Amazingly, Suidobashi has accepted with one condition - it has to be a melee battle.

"Come on guys, make it cooler," Suidobashi CEO and founder Kogoro Kurata said in a response video. "Just building something huge and sticking guns on it. It's Super-American.

"But you know, we really need... Melee combat," he continued. "If we're going to win this, I want to punch them to scrap and knock them down to do it."

Megabot founders Gui Cavalcanti and Matt Oehrlein originally equipped their Mark II model with paintball guns, but Kurata believes melee combat is far more exciting. And while I imagine the repair costs for both sides will be extensive afterwards, I can't say I disagree with the assessment. The Japanese robot - weighing in at 4000 kg - will face its 5400 kg US contender at some date in the future. But whenever and wherever this battle occurs you can be certain Suidobashi is fighting to win.

"I cannot let another country win this," Kurata said. "Giant robots are Japanese culture."

Oh my God.

Oh my sweet Zombie Jesus.

Are you... do you... We're here...

Do you get this?! We're here! Giant Droughts foretold [http://www.motherjones.com/blue-marble/2015/01/climate-change-farmers-midwest], 3d printed Limbs [http://enablingthefuture.org/tag/3d-printed-prosthetics/], Feelable Holograms [http://www.newsweek.com/scientists-have-invented-3d-holograms-289551], Biofoam [http://www.cryolife.com/about/research/biofoam], Cops who think they are the law and feel they can execute anyone at any time (not linking that)!

We can either end up in Mega City or some Syndicate shit right now. I was always hoping for a more Shadowrun turn of things, but I'll take this too!

If the Americans are going to say "Hell yeah!" to the wish to do melee combat... Words fail to describe my desire to witness this if that's going to be the case.

Suddenly my urge to reinstall Syndicate last week is explained. I'll add on another relevant prophecy that may yet come to pass: One Must Fall: 2097 [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Must_Fall:_2097].

Shinji: but I don't want to pilot the robot!
Coop: uh, dafuq?

Seriously though, what have we done? We can't win this, it's Japan! We should have started smaller. Like, zimbabwe or something.

I just reached max attention in my pants. This is something that needs to happen and needs to happen often!

Maybe an annual event when other countries can get involved and we can just have giant fucking robot duels every year!

I can already see the American robot revving a chainsaw or something when it gets in melee range, only to be split up by the Japanese robot's plasma Cutter. I really hope that they're serious about this.

Will be interesting.

Still...

Giant Robots are a bad military design and will NEVER be useful. Just target practice for better machines...
If by 'giant robot' you mean giant humanoid bipedal robot, then sure, you're probably right. Just 'giant robot' is not descriptive in any sense other than scale and can hardly be referred to as a 'design'. It could literally be anything that is robotic and large.

I hope to dear hell that they aren't going to be piloted by squeaky voiced, under-age anime girls. That would the only dealbreaker, probably.

This whole event can be played out with a tad of imagination; American robot runs in with low or high right hook, Japanese robot splits in two as one half flies above and the other half ducks down to take American robot legs out with a sweep. As the American robot panics and twists furiously to save itself, The flying half grabs the flailing machine and drives a telescopic, electrically-charged bladed down its spine. The resulting explosion kills the two, leaving only the lower half of the Japanese robot to claim its remaining victory. Then we find out they were playing for keeps on American territory. An invasion of the dreaded toddler death machine army soon follows. Tl:dr, American robot no win.

Are we approaching a future where we settle all international disputes with giant robot fights?

I never thought I'd live to see the day.
