X-Men: Apocalypse Shows Off Jubilee, Psylocke, And Young X-Men

X-Men: Apocalypse is bringing new and old X-Men together in the most 80s sequel yet.

It may not be getting much attention compared to <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/140727-Captain-America-Civil-War-Reveals-Plot-And-Cast-List>Civil War and <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/moviesandtv/13836-The-Marvel-Cinematic-Universe-Ultimate-Guide>Ant-Man right now, but Fox's X-Men franchise is pushing ahead full steam. In fact, Entertainment Weekly recently pulled back the curtain on <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/x-men%20apocalypse?os=x-men+apocalypse>X-Men: Apocalypse - a sequel bringing the First Class timeline into the 1980s. But what you might not have expected are characters decked out in nostalgic comic book costumes - including Jubilee's yellow jacket, Psylocke's revealing martial arts outfit, and <a href=http://mtv.mtvnimages.com/uri/mgid:file:http:shared:mtv.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/mohawk-storm1-1432910503.jpg?quality=0.85&format=jpg&width=480>Storm's 80s Mohawk.

Apocalypse opens ten years after <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escape-to-the-movies/9253-X-Men-Days-of-Future-Past>Days of Future Past with America's Reagan era well underway. Charles Xavier is finally running his school for mutants. Raven is rescuing oppressed and enslaved mutants worldwide. And Magneto - surprisingly - has fallen in love, given up his war, and tries to live a normal life in Poland. But everything changes when Apocalypse, the world's first mutant, wakes up in Egypt with a plan to purge human civilization. He even manages to convert Magneto into one of his four horsemen alongside Storm, Angel, and Psylocke. This prompts Xavier and Raven to work together and save the world, but for one problem: The 1980s X-Men are only students with no combat experience.

"[Xavier's] not teaching anybody how to fight at the moment," actor James McAvoy explains. "He's teaching people how to control their abilities so that they can work at a bank. But of course this movie challenges all of that."

Fox's X-Men films have traditionally avoided comic book-styled costumes for realism. (Cyclops made a crack about "yellow spandex" way back in X-Men 1.) But the floodgates are wide open in X-Men: Apocalypse, with most new characters wearing outfits falling somewhere between nostalgic and tacky. The strange thing is they fit the 1980s themes amazingly well, and should make Apocalypse the most visually distinctive yet.

Perhaps more importantly, Apocalypse is where younger actors are arriving to put more new spins on classic characters. Among the many additions, Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner joins the X-Men as Jean Grey, Tye Sheridan signs on as her love interest Cyclops, and Storm's villainous streak will be portrayed by Alexandra Shipp. The new cast will join the First Class trio of James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Jennifer Lawrence on May 27, 2016.

I never saw First Class, but I did see Days of Future Past and I loved it. Just bought the special Rogue edition that came out. And I have to say, this movie is looking good. I'm glad to see the "tacky" costumes back because that is part of the appeal I think. No more black leather, thank you. I mean, just looking at that yellow tench coat fills me with happiness.

I'm a little concerned that Storm is one of the Four Horsemen, as well as Psylocke, but I'm assuming they will be saved by the end of the film. Also wondering why there are four new Horsemen, because at the end of Days we clearly saw the four of them in the background.

No mention of Wolverine I notice. I wonder if he'll be in the film. Honestly, I kind of hope he won't, or it will just be a quick appearance.

I care about Jubilee But that might have something to do with me stating my X-Men collecting during her first appearance.

Anyways, Storm looks damn good; I'm glad to see the mohawk. Psylocke looks likes a decent translation of the costume from paper to film from those stills. I'm not blown away with Apocalypse's look but its pretty good considering his comic book appearance would not have translated well to the big screen.

Psylocke looks great (but then I like Olivia Munn and the Psylocke character so it is win/win). And the old mohawked Storm is awesome. I'm still middling on Apocalypse. I understand that they can't make him look like the comic character I love, but he kind of looks like a male Mystique in armour. I think they were going to make his skin grey originally but apparently that doesn't translate to screen well.

Except Thanos looks like a big, imposing powerhouse. This Apocalypse? I dont know, he just comes off a bit too scrawny for a villain that can take on entire teams of superheroes by himself. I think his design & costume look more like it belongs in a Star Trek episode than it does in a Hollywood blockbuster.

I've generally been almost entirely negative about Fox's Marvel films, but this? It might end up being awful, but for the first time I'm looking forward to one of 'em; it's about damn time they put some colour back into that 'verse.

I'm not surprised they did the mohawk Storm, that look is actually back in for women. Make no mistake, it's pure happenstance that she had a mohawk in that time period and they are putting it on her in the movie. If it was not a reasonably popular look she would not have it.

Apocalypse looks awful. I will withhold final judgement till I see the movie. Magneto with the helmet looked terrible in pictures but it looked good in the movie, I'm hoping this is the same kind of thing.

I don't mind the black leather in itself, but it's more or less a symbol of the movies being afraid of their comic book roots, so I'm glad when they go for comic costumes. If you ask me, the attempts to make Juggernaut and Magneto look more serious were part of the problem.

And while it's not Marvel, Batman will always be a guy in a mouse suit. You can't do that and not be a little ridiculous.

Didn't Jackman say this would be his last time as Logan? I would expect to see some of him. Maybe see him written out.

It's great to see that the films aren't afraid to go full-on comic geek anymore. The black leather stage was a result of that working so well for Batman and Blade, but when you have comic icons that are largely not about fighting the dark underworld, it doesn't really fit. Glad to see that's well and done. On Apocalypse, yea his comic form would not translate to screen well. But this look is more old Egyptian, similar to the most recent X-Men cartoon. I better see some Kaiju-sized fight scenes come out of this film. Just seeing him use energy blasts or TK would be detrimental to the threat this character should represent. It is a little sad they couldn't make a functional Psylocke look without going full-latex but it still looks good and comic-accurate, better than the one sideshot that was posted for the test fitting.

I will say this though, at least they haven't shined and buffed the latex so she looks like a fetish model (I'm looking at you Silk Spectre). It looks more functional than fashionable.

Wow, Sophie Turner must be psyched to finally play someone who doesn't get shit on every second. But who knows...

Anyway, it looks very 80's, which is great. Though Apocalypse looks like crap. He looked more intimidating as the scrawny guy at the very end of Days of Future Past. The recent X-Men movies, while great, have shown a disappointing lack of quality in make-up. Mystique's blue skin looked like wet paint, and Quicksilver's hair and eyebrows... *sigh*

And while I don't mind mohawk Storm, I thought that was her future look.

Fuck me Fox, I've seen better cosplays of Apocalypse. WTH? Why are we getting an Apocalypse that looks better suited to giving the damn Mighty Morphin Power Rangers a hard time? That's no En Sabah Nur, the first and last mutant, the savior/destroyer of mutantkind, nemesis of the Summers family, master of the four horsemen and so on... This guy is just an Ivan Ooze ripoff. WTF Fox, seriously what. the. fuck?

Either by his own choice or the studio's, Vaughn's definitely looking to reproduce Marvel's more "comic faithful" style, and I have to say I'm not a fan. The gaudy colors certainly do match an 80s style, but then having your superheroes look like Cyndi Lauper isn't exactly the most inspiring visual. Plus I'm left wondering if Psylocke's mutant power is keeping her vagina from popping out of her suit while she fights.

I'm not surprised though. To me Vaughn's always been the Michael Bay of comic book movies, where subtlety, subtext, or even a protagonist who isn't a colossal moron is left by the wayside. There's two great mysteries in life: why the internet hates DC for always being too serious but hates Teen Titans Go for not being serious, and why people love the X-Men movie where the ginger kid flies by screaming at the ground so much.
