Expect More Free Content, No Paid DLC, for Splatoon

Splatoon's co-director Tsubasa Sakaguchi says he has no plans for paid Splatoon DLC.

In an interview with Splatoon [http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-07-23-nintendos-bright-future-with-splatoon]'s co-director Tsubasa Sakaguchi revealed a bit about what is in store for the game's future, as well as what surprised him and Nintendo about it's players.

First up, you can expect more free content updates [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/141408-Splatoon-New-Ranked-Mode-Tower-Defense] throughout summer (and beyond), as Sakaguchi stated that "beyond August, there'll be new stages and new weapons slowly being released." One thing you shouldn't expect is paid DLC content, with Sakaguchi stressing that "At the moment, we're not planning any paid download content."

This statement, of course, may not stand true for the future, and we may see some paid Splatoon content at some point later down the line. But at least for now we'll all be riding the free content train. Hooray!

Sakaguchi also talked a bit about what surprised him most when the game went live. "When we were designing Splatoon, reaching level 20 was going to take quite a lot of time," he mused. "Learning the game mechanics with the gyro sensor - we thought that would take a lot of time. In that sense we're surprised that people have reached the level cap in such a short time. We're actually really worried about those people - worried that they're still sleeping and eating!"

Never underestimate hardcore gamers.

Well I'm glad they're not gonna abuse DLC, and make their customers pay 5.99 for a weapons or map pack.
Especially since there's a lot of locked on-disc content. If you're going to artificially dole this shit out, the least you can do is not charge for it.

Wasn't there something exclusive in the amiibo bundle pack that unlocked something you couldn't get otherwise?

I'd have been a lot happier if the game had had local multiplayer split-screen: we bought the game expecting that (this is the same company that gave us Goldeneye). That said, the game was really lacking on content overall; I don't think charging for more dlc would have been successful at all. Only took an hour before we went back to smash bros and mario cart.

I'm happy about this. But I have to wonder what exactly incentivizes a company to release free DLC? Is it intended to boost sales of the base game. That doesn't seem like it would be very affective, but maybe I'm loko.

I've been pretty happy with the content roll out so far. Sure it was a bit barren at first, but having kept up with Splatoon since launch, there is a lot to see and do these days in the game. At this point, if you have any interest in the game, but were worried about the amount of content, I would say it's substantial enough now.

I believe you get challenge missions, weapon skins, and exclusive outfits. It's not really anything that would make a player with Amiibos OP in anyway, which is nice considering they are kinda rare.

A new bucket weapon, gatling gun, three new maps, mode, some new clothes are on their way.
On top of that the new Team Matchmaking(teams of 4) and the For Fun Mode(up to 8 friends playing choosing modes/maps etc).

All within August or earlier - compared to the base game right now they have released around twice as much content. They check the balance of the game before releasing new weapons/maps.
