Splatoon August Update Adds Private Lobbies, Team Ranked Mode

You'll soon be able to make your own private customized Splatoon matches, as well as play ranked mode with friends.

We got a sneak peak at the upcoming lifted the curtain [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/splatoon] on everything the update plans to include. Brace yourselves, cause it's a big one. As well as new weapons and maps, the August update will include a level-cap increase (to level 50), over 40 new pieces of gear, and two new multiplayer modes: Private Battle and Squad Battle.

Private Battle will finally allow players to create their own private, fully-customizable lobbies. "Two to eight friends can battle together by selecting their favorite map, mode and weapons," explained Nintendo. "The number of participants ranges from 1v1 to 4v4, but teams don't have to be even: if the host chooses, he or she can select a 1v4, 1v2, or any other combination of players."

Squad Battle is best described as a kind of team ranked mode, allowing teams of two, three or four to join the ranked matchmaking queue against other teams of the same size. "In Squad Battle, players can participate in Ranked Battle rule sets with friends, rather than being teamed up with other players through a random selection."

The new level cap of 50 also comes with two additional ranked mode ranks (S and S+).

Lastly, Nintendo detailed those two new weapons we saw in the Japanese commercial, and as we presumed, they are of an entirely new weapon class, rather than just being modifications of existing weapons. "The bucket-like Slosher weapons hurl ink straight ahead at an impressive range. By adjusting the angle, these new weapons can be used to splat opponents who are up high or even on the other side of a wall. With the Gatling-style Splatling, players can charge all-powerful ink. A maximum charge unleashes the full potential of this particular weapon type."

The August update will be completely free to all Splatoon owners, and will be released on the 6th.

This sounds absolutely aweseome!!
Not that I will ever reach level 50 but everything else in this story :D

If someone is interested in making a team from Escapist users then feel free to join the WiiU Online Multiplayer usergroup and sign up. We have a few Splat00ners already there but now that we can actually team up, more than 4 people would be good since not everyone can always join up due to personal stuff and especially time differences.

They just need a Spectator mode and Splatoon can become a legit eSport. I can only imagine the type of compilations I can make if I had the capability of watching replays from different angles with free camera roam.

And there is a spectator mode in SmashBros which even implements other stuff into spectating (the betting for example) so it's not like the wouldn't have a basis/knowledge of spectation.

I would personally not use spectating unless there was something else to it, but many people these days seem quite fond of spectating other people, especially in cases like yourself, with thoughts about "filming" and editing stuff.

So with private lobbies & team grouping before matchmaking, can we finally have two people sit down at one console and play the normal online matches? Because current local co-op is a joke :/

I want to make a compilation of my quad kills - from different angles.
Also if you want to watch a tournament - having a spectator mode will enable a viewer to see the entire battlefield instead of one players POV.
If Nintendo is serious about positioning Splatoon as a competitive online multiplayer, the game really does need spectator mode as well as replays.

Wii U doesn't support multiple Gamepads and Splatoon is heavily focused on utilizing the Gamepad, thus the local co-op will likely not be expanded in the game since it doesn't appear to be a focus for Splatoon.

Hypothetically it supports 2 gamepads, but there's no evidence of this being possible in practice.
(or if they even ended up implementing the hardware features required to have a second gamepad)

I know I have not been active in the group, but you can count me in for anything Splatoon related!

OT: I really wish they had increased the level cap sooner, had I been collecting exp this entire time, I would probably be at level 50 by now. XD
