Catch Pokemon in The Real World With Pokemon Go For Smartphones

Pokemon Go is an alternate-reality game for your smartphone that lets you "see" and capture Pokemon in the real world.

What if Pokemon were in the real world? This is the ambitious question that Pokemon Go's reveal trailer asks. The Pokemon Company announced that it was working with former Google Ingress developer Niantic to bring the game to Android and iOS. Just like Ingress, Pokemon Go is an alternate-reality game that uses your phone's GPS and camera to digitally insert Pokemon into the real world, that players can then catch, collect, and battle, just like in the original games.

Watch the trailer to the right, which, while admittedly not really showing off too much in-game stuff, should give you a pretty good idea of what the game is about.

If that doesn't already sound cool enough, Nintendo is developing a companion smartwatch device called Pokemon Go Plus, which looks like this:

The watch will vibrate and light up when you get near to a Pokemon in the real world, and also lets you do cool things like mimic throwing a Pokeball to capture a Pokemon in-game.

It's set to release in 2016, and will be free-to-play with in-app purchases. We're assuming that the Pokemon Go Plus watch will set you back some cash though, we're not sure how much yet.

1) Create Pokemon Go game

2) Send people through dark alleys, crack houses, etc.

3) As they celebrate catching their newest dumpster-diving or crack-addicted Pokemon, hit them over the back of the head with a bag filled with Pokeballs, and steal their money. And their Pokemon.

4) Profit!

Wow. Nintendo might actually do something worthwhile after all this time. Looking forward to see further development.

Some questions:
Why were all the people happy about Mewtwo being caught? Did they all get one?
Will I have to go to a graveyard to catch Ghastly/Haunter?
Will it be available everywhere or just select countries?

I can't imagine how growing up with this will effect the latest generation. Especially as the technology matures.
I think people really underestimate the disruptive power of VR/AR.

So it's like back with teenage mutant ninja turtles with kids trying to get into sewers looking for them only as an actual game?

I don't see this working that well parents are far more over protective of their kids today and I don't see them having the time to escort their under 10's all around town looking for the right area that a pokemon might appear on a smartphone.

You notice how few of the people in that video of theirs are actually kids?
I mean, sure, they may be being overly optimistic, but it's pretty clear that's not their primary audience for this, going by that video...

(seriously, there's like... One child in the whole video, and they're looking at what is presumably their dad, play it.)

why not rename it "hallucination simulator v 1.0" or "frisk enabler".

It's the best way for the police to issue a stop and search for any acid you may have on you.

"I was catching a Pokemon." does not strike me as a valid excuse for breaking and entering either...

Pokebattling the police officer for freedom is right out.

I'd say "Take my money!"... but I don't have a smart phone (at the moment, anyway). Not sure how this new thing would translate to reality, though I'll still keep an eye out. Hopefully they'll make it so Pokémon don't turn up in dangerous places. Or other people's houses.

It's a trailer if it was accurate it would be loads of men MovieBob and Jim Sterling sized running around especially in the US.

How will this be disruptive? All this is is an app with GPS on your phone. All it will do is have a message and commands on your phone that say there's a Pokemon near you and you can battle it. Or do oyu believe that the trailer is actual footage of how it will work?

Fake. That person found a wild Charizard.
I'm very disappointed that someone stole my comment before I got to post it.

I can just picture a group of idiots standing in the middle of an empty street, flailing their arms into the open air and shouting about catching a metapod. This is going to be amazing.

And avoiding the stares from everybody wondering which asylum you have been let out from, assuming they just don't beat the shit out of you for being weird.
