New Fallout 4 "Educational Video" Series is Quite S.P.E.C.I.A.L.

Do you know what makes you S.P.E.C.I.A.L.?

Bethesda has published [http://bethesda.net/#en/events/game/fallout-4-special-video-series/2015/09/10/24] the first episode in a new series of seven "educational videos" for Fallout 4 aimed at teaching survivors of "atomic annihilation" how to rebuild, along with the seven special attributes - Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility and Luck - that make them S.P.E.C.I.A.L.

"Following total atomic annihilation, the rebuilding of this great nation of ours may fall to you," the video description reads. "That's why Vault-Tec has prepared this educational video series for you to better understand the seven defining attributes that make you S.P.E.C.I.A.L.!"

The first video captures the essence of cheesy 1950-1960 era informational cartoons, complete with cheesy narration, and focuses on the attribute of strength. The video doesn't include gameplay, but rather serves as a gory explanation of the game's features for newcomers as well as a clever suspense-builder leading up to Fallout 4's November 10 release.

In other Fallout 4 news, Bethesda recently announced [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/142330-Fallout-4-to-Have-Regular-Free-Updates-DLC-Season-Pass] that the game will feature "regular free updates," that "come with not just fixes, but new features," as well as a season pass for all future DLC.

Fallout 4 releases on PC, PS4 and Xbox One on November 10.

I appreciate the subtle under-current of "You are going to repeatedly die a horrible, horrible death. And we're going to laugh."

That nail board was literally the pain train from TF2.

A railroad spike on a stick isn't a new concept.
Would you believe my YouTube comment got the same reply? People are so quick to assume you mean something negative or that you're some kind of fool. And before you say what the other guy did, literally has been accepted as an intensifier.

Not necessarily negative, it's just that the comparison you made would make more sense if a unique weapon made an appearance in the video. A railroad spike on a stick isn't unique. It's like saying that every chainsaw in a game is literally the chainsaw from doom. A nail on a stick is just one step from a stone on a stick; one of the first, if not the first, actual weapon ever used by mankind that weren't literally just a stick or a stone.

I'd wager there's notable enough design difference between a board with a nail (or some) in it and a banded, frayed plank with a railroad spike in the end to point out a similarity and not mean anything negative (or anything at all) by it. I might pick up a nail board such as the one in this video in-game and joke to myself:

Huhu, +1 capture rate passive buff?

Pick up this one [http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/fallout/images/5/5b/Nail_board.png/revision/20110209220830] and think nothing at all of it. It's the extent of the similarities. Short stick, big rail spike, frayed end, banded handle.

If your next question is "why'd you comment if you meant nothing by it?" my answer is I'm not sure. Maybe I should have said something silly relating to the effects of the pain train in TF2 to clarify I didn't mean to be taken seriously. But tbf, I was using literally's informal context and potentially making a ridiculous statement. But who can blame you, it's the internet.

As for the Doom chainsaw, literally hundreds of similar, real-life chainsaws come up in a yellow chainsaw google search. That's not so easy to match for a nail board.

But overall I feel stupid for spending so much time trying to feel justified in making such a useless comparison.
