Well my first question (since I'm admittedly too lazy to look it up) is what the budget actually was. That could be why this was green lit. Maybe the idea is to rate this compared to all the other found footage horror movies cluttering up Netflix or occasionally the box office.

To sort of put it into perspective, how would this rate compared to say JJ Abram's "Cloverfield" which was also seen as a huge disappointment?

M. Night Shyamalan is probably the new Uwe Boll.
Why did they even make movies in the first place (rhetorical question).

Shyamalan self-financed the movie using his salary from After Earth without any major studio backing with a small, but dedicated cast & crew behind him. He even stated how before he sent the movie to Blumhouse, he considered self-releasing the movie on VOD.

As for the movie itself, I don't mind the twist, but it was very predictable. But yeah, the movie couldn't decide if it wanted to be a horror film or a comedy, and failed at both.

Tax evasion. That's why Uwe Boll did it.

Less than $5 million, peanuts in other words.

I could not disagree more. The movie cemented itself early as a horror comedy and worked incredibly well on both counts. Initially I was worried that the little brother would go into annoying kid mode but thankfully it never happened. The grandparents were effectively "off" and got creepier as the film progressed.

Even the found footage thing, which I am increasingly getting tired of, worked well.

It definitely is going to be a split down the middle film. There are already people who love it and those who don't.

The only question ever raised in my mind when I see movie reviews here is wtf I would ever pay attention to a movie review on a game website.

On a certain level, this sound like Cold Comfort Farm.

Except failing to commit to being a comedy. And done "found footage" style. And, very unlike CCF, completely crap.

M. Knight doesn't have one great film, he has no great films. The twist in the Sixth Sense was the WORST kind of twist, lying to the audience instead of letting them deceive themselves. I wonder if there is a version of Deus Ex Machina for this, where the "twist" is based on just handwaving everything you've used to deceive the audience. The Sixth Sense isn't an awful movie but it is totally undone by its crappy twist ending.

As for Unbreakable... no. Sorry but hell no. Our hero doesn't know he's super strong, really? Because no one's ever asked him to help them move? He never played a sport in his life? I can see past that "didn't know he was invulnerable" part as at least worthy of suspense of disbelief, even if it means not thinking about the fact that he never fell down, tore open his jeans and failed to scratch a knee, never had a hangnail, never so much as accidentally mishandled any sharp object ever. But the "totally didn't know he had super strength" makes a moron of us. How the ass is that even possible, let alone plausible? There are some good ideas in Unbreakable but a great film it is not; not with the mess it makes out of the "guy who's a super hero has no clue" premise.

As for this latest installment, I'll pass. Maybe when I'm bored beyond tears some night I'll fire it up so I can roll my eyes and continue to question why people like ANY of this man's movies.

This... Isn't a game website. Have you not seen the banner on the top of every page?

"Video Games | Movies & TV | Comics & Cosplay | Tabletop | Science & Tech"

It's been like that for quite some time.

Actually, now that you brought it up, why wasn't this a short film? It could have plausibly been nominated for "Best Short Film" or something...

Other than that, I still laugh a little whenever I see the grandma yell "YAHTZEE!" and I don't know why... :p

Why would you recommend The Happening over this? I would not wish that upon my worst enemies, who would gladly beg for the sweet release of death instead of watch that.

You mean to tell me a movie that everyone knew was going to suck when they saw the "Directed By:" credit in the trailer ended up sucking? Color me surprised!

The answer to that is simple: when he retires.

Hey-oooooohhhhhh!

Apparently the twist in this one involves shoving a soiled diaper in somebody's face.

I didn't think that Shyamalan could possibly go further south. I was wrong.
I heard about that. All I could think of is that scene from Venture Bros. when Dean yells out "HIS POO DIAPERS!" at Triana.

I think a lot of people want to have that same reaction they did whenever they first saw Sixth Sense and once experienced, it can't be duplicated. M. Knight may also be guilty of trying to ride that signature hook through his career (minus Avatar, but thats a different story). As far as movies with definitive twists, Wild Things was most likely my favorite twisted perspective movies (minus the Kevin Bacon's bacon shot, I could have done without it) and since I saw it before Sixth Sense I thought the latter twist was quaint and well framed but hardly had the near u-turn that Wild Things threw me on.

That being said, and possibly derailing my point, the major disappointments with Shyamalan's work post-Unbreakable are possibly a combination of some of the films being absolutely poor and also mayhaps a bit of bitterness that the sequel to said film has not been talked about nor hinted at. And since people expect the twist, the expectation by that very nature makes whatever the twist may be just that much less of an impact on the audience.
I'd be willing to bet a person with no foreknowledge of Shyamalan's work could comfortably sit and watch most of his work without ever being clued into who directed it by way of editing out the credit and enjoy most of it and maybe even be surprised by the twists.
