Dalai Lama Twitter Turns Out to Be Fake

Despite what some members of the press were desperate to believe, the rumors about the Dalai Lama being the latest Twitter convert have turned out to be false.

Even the Associated French Press [http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5jC7BkWeuYbOk9bwmt-EgyMEQSTUg] believed the rumors that his Holiness, The Dalai Lama, had an account on Twitter. And soon 20,000 followers had flocked to hear his computerised teachings.

The real teachings should have come from the attributed words of P.T.Barnum [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P._T._Barnum], "There's a sucker born every minute."

Biz Stone, co-founder of Twitter, has said the account was suspended because it violated the site's terms regarding impersonation. How he found out is anyone's guess but one should always remember the words of the master, "Sometimes one creates a dynamic impression by saying something, and sometimes one creates as significant an impression by remaining silent."

Obviously, there are some people who will attempt to create these accounts just for the lulz [http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=lulz], as was shown last month when 33 hijacked celebrity accounts resulted in a so-called Britney Spears tweeting that her [removed] was [removed] with [removed].

Why did so many people believe this?
It seems a lot of people havn't realised this yet, so I'll spell it out for them;

The internet is full of horrible people who do horrible things for their own amusement.

Question: Why is this considered horrible?
I would argue that its horrible because the Dalai Lama has a lot of followers, many of whom were tricked into thinking these were his actual words.

Though I can see where you are coming from, its not nearly as horrible as many of the other 'pranks' people do over the internet.

Still, I can't see any way this can be viewed as a benevolent act; I would bet money that whoever did this didn't do so for any truly benevolent reason, it was just for 'teh lulz'.

I do have to say, that society this day is full of a bunch of retards.
If you actually thought it was the real guy, then that person should just go jump off a bridge.

EDIT: OP, I love how you link to P. T. Barnum's page on Wikipedia, which says "He never said "There's a sucker born every minute" but his rebuttal to critics was often "I am a showman by profession...and all the gilding shall make nothing else of me."[1]"
I've got a lot of respect for Barnum. There's a man that knows the value of a good soundbite. So it was attributed to him, rather than said. (Glad to know someone clicks the links as well :))
