Makes sense he'd steal Marvin's Space Modulator. It prevents the Earth-shattering KABOOM, so there's still an Earth to go back to. At least they didn't land and set up base near one of the poles, so they don't bother the Ice Warriors.

That is entirely dependent on which Doom game you believe.
For Doom 1 and 2, you are exactly right. 3 however starts you on the surface of Mars itself.
